Bowl Destination and Opponent - Hank 91 - 12-02-2017

I thought I'd start a thread here to keep track of things.

It seems what I've read in other threads is correct -- the Shaw-Harbaugh Dream Matchup in the Holiday Bowl seems highly unlikely, and as electric as that would've been, the other options I'm seeing are decidedly mediocre. Northwestern? Ugh. But San Diego's a short drive for me, so I'm still looking forward to it if it works out that way.

It would be nice to pay the Wildcats back for that 2015 loss that probably knocked us out of the playoffs. Assuming of course, we do it.

Re: Bowl Destination and Opponent - jacketree - 12-02-2017

Si.com has Stanford-Oklahoma State in the Alamo and Washington-Northwestern in the Holiday. Cougs at Levi’s.

We’ll know tomorrow.

Would Okla St present similar challenges to Southern Kal?

Probably tougher.  OK ST ranks #2 in total offense and #75 in total defense.  USC ranks #13 in total offense and #79 in total defense.

One of my best friends is a Poke.  I would relish a matchup similar to the 2012 Fiesta Bowl during which we shared a bottle of fine Scotch.  Unfortunately, I ended up picking up the tab for that one.  Win or lose, great football, great friends and fine whiskey make for a rich experience.

Geaux Cardinal!

Re: Bowl Destination and Opponent - stupac2 - 12-02-2017

According to FEI OKST is about the same as USC on defense but much better on offense and much worse on STs (and we're much better on STs than both). So it would probably be a pretty tough game for us, though it would be neat to have a chance for revenge.

Since Alamo picks ahead of Holiday I don't see them picking Stanford. UW's fan base will travel far better to San Antonio than Stanford's, and bowl game decisions are always about one thing - $$$$$$$$.

I will be surprised if we aren't in the Holiday Bowl. If we end up in the Amazing Chicken Bowl I will likely not go. I have never had anything remotely close to even a mediocre experience at Levi's whether it was for a game or a concert.

Re: Bowl Destination and Opponent - Hey - 12-02-2017

I've posted this before, but 10ish years  ago my friend who worked closely with San Diego sporting events told me several times that Stanford would never be invited to the Holiday Bowl because of the band. I'm curious to see what happens next.

Re: Bowl Destination and Opponent - d4cohn - 12-02-2017

TCU got demolished by Oklahoma for the second time this season in the Big 12 Championship Game today. TCU was in-line for the last NY6 at large berth, but given the way they lost, I would not be surprised if Washington went to a NY6 bowl instead. If that happens, it would be down to Wash St. and Stanford for the Alamo Bowl.

Re: Bowl Destination and Opponent - d4cohn - 12-02-2017

Another important factor re Holiday Bowl: Washington State played there last year, and put up a pretty uninspiring performance to say the least. The Holiday Bowl may not like our band, but they may not have a choice.

Re: Bowl Destination and Opponent - Mick - 12-02-2017

Alamo Bowl.  Wow.  Can't wait to stay away from that.

Re: Bowl Destination and Opponent - French Rage - 12-02-2017

Why would the Holiday Bowl care about or band?  Is it the conservative naval presence in San Diego?

Re: Bowl Destination and Opponent - Snorlax94 - 12-02-2017

Mick,
What’s wrong with the Alamo Bowl (besides what happened last time)?

I think Stanford has a good team and I’d like the best possible bowl and opponent.

Re: Bowl Destination and Opponent - Embo - 12-02-2017

If we go to San Antonio, I can visit the Alamo and check out the basement.

I didn't ask. It wasn't the first time I've heard someone complain about the band. I did remark that it seemed like quite a trivial reason.

Candidly, for me it's about the whole experience.  If I'm going to take off time from work and spend a fair amount of money, I want to see Stanford play and preferably win, I want it to be in a great venue and beautiful city and if possible, I want friends and family around.  I wouldn't even mind getting some work in.  I can do all of those things in San Diego.  In San Antonio, I can see the game.

I enjoyed the last time I went to the stadium. 1998 Final Four

Re: Bowl Destination and Opponent - Goose - 12-02-2017

I like San Antonio. If we go to the Alamo bowl, I might attend. I also like San Diego, so I could enjoy that also. Foster Farms bowl, probably not, unless we play somebody really interesting.

Re: Bowl Destination and Opponent - Phogge - 12-02-2017

I would like to see a Stanford- Memphis game. Memphis not much defense, maybe the best wideout in the country and a river  boat gambler QB.
