WSoc: Stanford 3 UCLA 2 114! - Viking_Guy - 12-02-2017

And I love ESPNast Coast bias.

The women's College Cup Final, between two West Coast teams that play wonderful possession soccer, is scheduled for 9 frickin' AM Pacific Time tomorrow morning.  I guess ESPN didn't want to interfere with their coverage of mediocre NFL games during the later portions of the morning

Will turn this into a match thread, but that's just...

Re: WSoc: Stanford v UCLA Sunday 9 AM PT - 81alum - 12-02-2017

We can follow up watching soccer with the WBB Baylor game at 11.

Re: WSoc: Stanford v UCLA Sunday 9 AM PT - 2006alum - 12-02-2017

Among the reasons that this game will be epic is the fact that the winner will break the tie for most NCAA team championships. Stanford and UCLA are both at 113. Rather dramatic way to break the tie!

Re: WSoc: Stanford v UCLA Sunday 9 AM PT - Viking_Guy - 12-02-2017

At least it's before the men's water polo final, which is at 3 pm PT.

EDIT: And which will feature UCLA (113 championships) and u$c (104).  It would be nice to knock off the Bruins, but who the hell do I cheer for in water polo?

Re: WSoc: Stanford v UCLA Sunday 9 AM PT - Treebound - 12-03-2017

Is the College Cup televised?  Amazing that it's not even on the P12 network?

Re: WSoc: Stanford v UCLA Sunday 9 AM PT - Canalejas - 12-03-2017

It should be on ESPNU.

And I wouldn't mind still being tied with the Bruins in NCAA titles at the end of today.  No way I'm cheering for USC in water polo.

Re: WSoc: Stanford v UCLA Sunday 9 AM PT - Viking_Guy - 12-03-2017

A relatively even start, spoiled by an absolute howler by Bruin keepe Teagan Micah, misplacing a high bouncing ball and letting it get behind her to a lurking Kyra Carusa, who promptly turned and fired it into the back of the net.

1-0, 15 minutes in.

That heavy shadow in the Stanford penalty area has got to be hell for Jahansouz.

Re: WSoc: Stanford v UCLA Sunday 9 AM PT - M T - 12-03-2017

1-0 Stanford in the 15th minute.  Goalie chased the ball and missed.  Carusa kicked it in.

Stanford is pressing very hard.  UCLA had a double-overtime game and so I think Stanford is trying to wear them out.
But UCLA has had a few chances.

Re: WSoc: Stanford v UCLA Sunday - Viking_Guy - 12-03-2017

Sullivan!  Against the run of play, with UCLA having consisten pressure, Macario picks out a run from Sullivan in behind the right side of the defense, and she convert on a narrow angle from about 14 yards.

Keep it up, Card!

Re: WSoc: Stanford v UCLA Sunday - Treefence - 12-03-2017

Probably the two best players for Stanford connect for a goal.  Macario sends Sullivan who gets behind the D and rips it past the keeper!  2-0 Stanford, under 20 left in the first half.

Re: WSoc: Stanford v UCLA Sunday - BobK - 12-03-2017

Hands legal I see.  What a terrible non call

Re: WSoc: Stanford v UCLA Sunday - Embo - 12-03-2017

Keep updates coming, please.  Thank you!  I am at work (yes, I am in medicine) so no chance to watch.  And the more descriptive, the better.

Re: WSoc: Stanford v UCLA Sunday - M T - 12-03-2017

I can imagine that a ref might blink and miss such an obvious call.  But can't the ones on the sideline assist in that call??
On a shot from just outside the box, how can you not call it?

Dangerous situation there for UCLA, but Stanford avoided the bullet.

Re: WSoc: Stanford v UCLA Sunday - 81alum - 12-03-2017

What a wonderful first half to watch, with Stanford dominating time of possession through skilled passing.

Our first goal was made possible by a bit of a lucky bounce, but the follow-through volley by Kyra Caruso into the goal was right on the money and could have been kicked over the cross bar.  The second goal was a beautiful feed through to Andi Sullivan who gets just the right angle and puts it to the right of the diving goalie.    An obvious handball was not called on UCLA, but we could have been stuck with a penalty in the box at the other end--I think it was a good non call since it looked to me that the UCLA player Julia Hernandez was pushing off Tierna Davidson but even so, a fortunate non-call for us.

Thank goodness neither team came out in a bunker.  VG, does Stanford change strategy much when it is up by 2?  Or can we expect the same level of fluid play in the second half?

Re: WSoc: Stanford v UCLA Sunday - Viking_Guy - 12-03-2017

Halftime, Stanford 2 UCLA 0.

Basically, Stanford dominated early run of play with their pressure - UCLA was trapped in their own end.  But as the midfield started to tire, the Bruins started to gain more of the ball, and started to put pressure on Stanford's backline, firing the ball through to a streaking Mace.

Stanford had good chances apart from the goals, but so did the Bruins, mostly on Stanford defensive miscues.  In the last 5 minutes of the half, Kiki Pickett dove in after a ball about 25 yards out, leaving her player to try to win the ball and letting it be slotted easily behind her, leading to several good chances for the Bruins, including a final one blocked clear and then chased outside and won for a goal kick by Tegan McGrady.

The second was the nightmare scenario I've had.  Alana Cook, under a little pressure on a high ball, decides that maintaining possession is more important than playing a safe ball, and tries to head it back to Jahansouz.  And misses badly, heading it diagonally away from both Jahansouz and any other defender and into the path of Sanchez(?), who runs in as Davidson tries to catch up from behind.  The UCLA forward tries one of the great forward tricks - she hooks her arm under Davidson's, grabs on, and pulls while falling, making it look as if Davidson pushed her over.  Luckily, the ref didn't buy it.

Of course, he also could've not been buying it because he absolutely blew an earlier hand-ball call, when Boissiere launched a curling shot from the top of the area toward her right post.  The UCLA defender left her hand out, made herself bigger, and a good shot was rendered a harmless bouncer.  Should have been a PK, but if he hadn't called that and then called the latter one on Davidson, I would've exploded.

Safely through to halftime, up 2-0.  That's all I was thinking in those last five minutes, don't let them back in.  The first 5-10 of the second half will be equally important - if Stanford can weather them, I think heavy legs from the 120+ on Friday might start to catch up with the Bruins.

PLEASE, ALANA and KIKI, don't play slow rolling balls through the center of the field.  For my heart's sake.

VG

Re: WSoc: Stanford v UCLA Sunday - M T - 12-03-2017

UCLA is not rolling over, down 2-0.  They've had good chances.  One of the announcers thinks an interaction should have been a PK when the UCLA attacker pushed the Stanford player away and both went down.  I don't know how that should be ruled.

Stanford owned the ball for the first 20 minutes or so.  It has been more even since then.  Both teams have had the ball in the attacking third a good while.  There have been long runs for both teams.  Stanford has almost gotten burned a couple of times by loose play of our goalie.  (I don't know how injured our alternate goalie is, but I think there's a good chance she might come in for the 2nd half.)

Re: WSoc: Stanford v UCLA Sunday - Viking_Guy - 12-03-2017

MT-

You're right, I forgot Jahansouz playing a drop back ball with no urgency and letting Mace close and block her kick. She was extremely lucky the ball bounced right back to her.

But that Cook header was both a bad idea and bad execution.

Second half just about to kick.

Re: WSoc: Stanford v UCLA Sunday - M T - 12-03-2017

Another no call that should have been.  Carusa open running into the box toward the right goal post.  One defender inside toward the center.  One defender coming up behind her.  The defender is running to the left of Carusa's legs.  Then she takes a step and puts her right foot to the right of Carusa and then brings it back to the left, clipping Carusa's heel and sending her down onto the ball.

The ref immediately signals no call.  Carusa, dazed, is on top of the ball (I thought her hands hit the ball on the way down).  Then she gets up and tries to continue.  ANOTHER player sticks her foot out but misses the ball and Carusa gets tripped again.

Is this the way soccer is supposed to be called.

Re: WSoc: Stanford v UCLA Sunday - Treefence - 12-03-2017

Shaky game for our keeper overall, the almost costly blunder in the first half, then she misreads a play in the box giving up a PK.  Then on the PK, it was actually quite savable and she went the right direction, but didn't get enough and the ball goes into the corner.  Now she almost gets caught in between but Davidson saves her.

Re: WSoc: Stanford v UCLA Sunday - Viking_Guy - 12-03-2017

Ucla gets a ok to get back to 2-1. Davidson whiffs on a through ball, letting a player in alone, and Jahansouz trips her up. Jahansouz gets a hand on the attempt, but can't keep it out.

Dibiasi had a great chance to get it back, but sprayed a nice drop back at the penalty spot from Haley high.

2-1, and cook lets mace through again. zGulp.

59th minute. And a ucla corner gets in. Stanford is on their heels entirely. Carusa gets beaten at the far post.

They were WAY too satisfied with a 2-0 lead.

Crap.
