17-17 halfway through the first half. I don't see Davis in the box score? Is he hurt, too?Â

Thanks for the heads-up.

I haven't seen a close-up of the bench but it appears Davis isn't suited up.

Stanford leads 29-27 at the half despite not scoring for the last 3:40+.
Beach didn't score for the last 2:30+.
Travis gets denied twice from point blank range.
Their D may be good, but we're also playing sloppily.

Down 68-63 with a couple minutes left.

78-66 the final.
I hate to say it so early, but doubts are creeping in on Haase.

Yeah when you have to play a walk on for 18 minutes, you know you've got a short bench. That said, we're definitely regressing from last season...

I don't really understand the criticisms of Haase. Last year's team featured 3 seniors and a bunch of juniors getting most of the minutes. This year, we're starting 2-3 freshman every game, with our bench consisting of Sharma, a redshirt freshman, and a walk-on. I don't think there's a coach in the country that could do much better.
If we're still playing this badly when everyone is healthy, then we have a problem. But until the team is healthy, I'm withholding judgment on Haase.

Two weeks until the next game gives good time to heal. So I am retaining optimism for the Pac12 season.Â
Sincerely hope Davis' absence is only a ding . . .

I agree 100%. When you're down to 6 or 7 scholarship players there's only so much you can do. Doesn't take away from the fact that the team that is playing is not good, but there's no basis on which to question Haase as a coach.
Fingers crossed that the boys can get healthy over Dead Week & Finals and we see a much better team on Dec 30 against the Weenies!

It has to be the play calling.

Yeah, Hulk, I'm sure you and . . . one or two other True Believers found the play calling under this regime to be brilliant. Didn't those MSU Rose Bowl flashbacks against SC give you the warm-fuzzies?
It's about putting your team in the best position to win. That involves a lot of things outside of play calling - which this coach has done incredibly well. But that doesn't - and shouldn't - immunize the coach from a pretty impactful deficiency in this set of ingredients.

No -- Haase is just stubborn!

I think it is reasonable to cite injuries as a reason for the underperformance so far. We
do have a very thin bench and we
are missing key ingredients. Still, this was supposed to be a year where Haase took a major step forward with the team. We were picked to finish 5th in the Pac-12. And at some point, Haase will have to start winning games that we aren't expected to, rather than citing injuries or the strength of opponent, or other things as justifications for a loss.
Don't get me wrong, I am a long way from concluding that Haase isn't the right person. But the first niggling of a doubt has started to creep in.

Why is everyone so hard on Haase? He is just "pulling a Shaw", you know how the first 1/3 of the schedule doesn't count (in his preparedness). Trying to figure out what QB to use, OL...

It's also revisionist history to cite injuries. The first chin-scratching occurred in the second game of the season, against Pacific, when the team utterly collapsed at the end of the game. In other words, the team has been performing questionably since the beginning of the year. While I agree with BC that it's too early to declare Haase a failure, it's not too early to be concerned.

As for Haase, the Okpala DQ has got to hurt.
Am with crowd who still thinks this was a good hire, but is also beginning to get concerned. Given the numbers involved, hoops recruiting is even more important than it is in football recruiting (though you just have to have a good QB to be competitive). Dawkins was a pretty good recruiter. Haase's class looked good on paper initially, but with Okpala out and Davis struggling, that definitely takes some of the shine off the class. I like Da Silva a lot. And the Aussie has some moxie (Chris Hernandez, Lite?).
It's the returners who need to show more consistently - and most notably Humphreys, Cartwright, and Sharma. Travis has been good and Pickens (when healthy) is playing about how you'd expect.
The Cardinal needed the returners to be a notch above last year AND the newcomers to help immediately. Unfortunately, neither has really happened. [BTW, I'm not sold on the assembled masses of suits on the bench either. Maybe I'm getting old and out of touch, but from this angle there appears to be a lack of gravitas AND fire from the assistants - though I cop 100% to this just being an initial take].
