Future at Running back -

I see Scarlett earned Honorable mention All Pac 12. That's impressive backing up the best player in the country.
I'm curious, how do fellow fans view his performance as a backup relative to what Stepfan Taylor did as a backup behind Gerhart? Taylor had an impressive record-setting career, but I don't remember folks being especially high on him before he took over as starter. Similar with Gaffney. Both were clearly better than competent, but I didn't expect them to set the world on fire like I suspected Love might.
Is Scarlett in the Taylor/Gaffney category? Better? Worse?Â
The sad and remarkable thing is that if he he performs at that level, it will still be a step down from McCaffrey and Love.

I think Scarlett needs to spend the off season working on lower body strength. He goes down way too easily at first contact. That was a partial factor on the 4th and goal play.
Also Speights is way better in pass protection at this point.
If Scarlett could be at Gaffneys level that would be nice.

Stepfan Taylor's line in 2009 (as a freshman):
56 carries for 306 yards (5.46 ypc), 2 TD, 25.5 yards per game
Gaffney's line in 2009 (as a freshman):
22 carries for 84 yards (3.82 ypc), 1 TD, 7.64 yards per game
in 2011 (as a junior backing up Taylor):
74 carries for 449 yards (6.07 ypc), 7 TD, 34.54 yards per game
Scarlett's line this year (as a RS Freshman):
86 carries for 385 yards (4.48 ypc), 6 TD's, 29.6 yards per game
Scarlett has been used more this year than Taylor or Gaffney were in 2009 as freshman (maybe because they shared carries). His yards per carry are a bit lower than Taylor, but higher than Gaffney his frosh year. I think there's a reasonable case to be made that Scarlett could wind up in the Taylor/Gaffney category, but there is a lot of uncertainty around that.

Scarlett is a RS Soph. He and Love were in the same recruiting class.

Stepfan was All-Pac 12 HM in 2010, and 2T in 2011 and 2012.
Tyler was All-Pac 12 2T in 2013.
Now, we should remember that their relative successes were also due in large part to the OL in front of them...
2010: Jonathan Martin-Andrew Phillips-Chase Beeler-David DeCastro-Derek Hall
2011: Martin-David Yankey-Sam Schwartzstein-DeCastro-Cameron Fleming
2012: Yankey-Khalil Wilkes-Schwartzstein-Kevin Danser-Fleming
2013: Andrus Peat-Yankey-Wilkes-Danser-Fleming
Those were some great, great OLs, and they also had some great FBs and TEs blocking for them.
2018: Walker Little-Foster Sarell-Jesse Burkett-Nate HeBIG-A.T. Hall (with Nick Wilson, Brian Chaffin, and Devery Hamilton returning, as well possibly Brandon Fanaika). Reagan Williams at FB. I have more concerns with our blocking at TE.
I'm impressed Cam Scarlett got HR (as returner), something neither Stepfan or Tyler did as backups. The eye test tells me that Cam is neither as strong as Stepfan nor as fast as Tyler. Hopefully both can be worked on. But, if we get consistent OL play next year, I don't see why he could not approach those two, say, 1250-1400 yards, especially if he splits time with Speights and Wedington.

I haven't isolated him in rewatches as much as I should have. I hope you're right.

Kaden Smith is a fantastic blocker. We'll be fine. Parkinson is the only guy who's a real minus as a blocker (as shown on the disastrous -17 on the maybe-lateral. To be honest, I was more angry about Parkinson missing the block than the refs' call, as the play really should've been an easy completion for like 5-7 yards, plus more if you miss a tackle.)
Anyway, with respect to the running back position, Scarlett grew a lot between 2016 to 2017. If that rate of growth can be duplicated with either Scarlett OR Speights we'll be fine there, especially since I expect the '18 OL to be punishing.

Wedington looks like the heir apparent. He's faster than Scarlett or Speights, has better vision, low pad level, and very good speed out of his cuts.Â
Scarlett should be farther along in his third year; what we have seen is likely all we are going to get.
An X factor her might be a late get in this recruiting class--speaking of vision and speed out of his cuts. As a true freshman, this fellow might get only five carries a game, but five good carries in relief of Wedington and Speights could give us a very good running game behind what should be one of our great OLs.

So mysterious. Well if recruiting is an X factor, I'd love for Ryan Nall to be the Z factor. Check that. I'd actually like for Bryce love to be the X, Y, and Z, factor, but doubt that is happening. I'm seeing more and more places talk about him as a first rounder.
I wouldn't be so quick to write off Scarlett though. He basically lost part of his redshirt year to a torn ACL, which can take years to truly recover from. He improved tremendously from his RS frosh to RS soph year. Maybe he will level out, or maybe another year with the RB Guru will work wonders.

Scarlett is a couple of years removed from a serious knee injury and hes improved each year. Dont know where his ceiling might be but it would surprise me if weve seen it already.

Interesting OL.
Are you specifically predicting that Sarell moves to guard, or just guessing at our top 5 OL.
Generically, I would guess that the most likely replacement for Bright would be either Wilson or Fanaika (if he returns). But, I don't know what the coaches are thinking.

Would love to know if this is your thinking or you have heard something from inside the program.
Earlier this season it was my thinking. Then I heard rumour that coaches were viewing Lund as a more likely heir and this leaning toward keeping Weddington as a receiver. Of course things went awry there as far as Lund being a Stanford RB goes, so even if there was truth to that rumour, it could be back to Weddington now.
[And quit the tease on recruiting.]

Yeah, I noticed that from this thread, thought I'd gotten away with it. The Stanford Facebook post wasn't clear.Â
Honestly, if you'd told me at the beginning of the season that Scarlett would earn Honorable Mention all Pac 12 and asked me to name the position, Kick returner wouldn't be one of my first 2 guesses. So, I'm still impressed, but it has different significance than what I implied in the context of our succession at running back.

The loss of Lund is most disappointing. I saw him practice and was amazed with his agility and cutting ability at 254 pounds. He's a bad, bad boy. Utah may be getting their own Voldemort runner-up.

I want to see Scarlett work on his agility more than anything else. If can make even just ONE good cut he can be devestating. As mentioned above, lower body strength a la Gaffney would be the second thing on my wish list for him.
I've come around on Love to think that he's not leaving because I think his draft stock won't be that high today but it could be higher if he can demonstrate improved pass-blocking and receiving ability. He also probably needs to add 5-10 lbs. At his size he can't survive as a feature running back in the NFL, so he needs to demonstrate an all-purpose ability if he wants to be a first-round pick.

Uh, yeah, uh, here's a quote from a while back on this:
Quote:I think you're all way off base. Bryce Love is absolutely made to carry the rock 20 or more times per game. If there is anything that Bryce Love is made to do on the football field, it is that.Â
Weird that the date stamp isn't on there, though. Not sure how that happened....

One might argue that he wasn't made to carry the ball that much considering he got injured halfway through the season.
