Could Wilcox leave Berkeley for Eugene? - ColoradoTree - 12-05-2017

To be clear, I haven't heard anything from reporters suggesting this is likely or in the works, by any stretch.  I've just seen his name on a few lists spitballing possible replacements for Taggart.  But consider this:

* Justin Wilcox was born in Eugene, Oregon, and grew up nearby.
* He played DB for the Ducks, graduating in 1999.
* His dad, Dave Wilcox, played football for the Ducks.
* His older brother, Josh Wilcox, played football for the Ducks.

I mean, if you're a Cal fan, aren't you sweating bullets right about now?  If there is a desire at Oregon to stop being seen as a "stepping stone" program, they could do a heck of a lot worse than hiring an alum with such deep ties to the area and with as much experience recruiting the Northwest as anyone.  Sure, 5-7 isn't the best head coaching resume, but that obscures the improvements I thought Cal made this year as a program.

Wilcox has been mentioned and would be a good fit forth reasons you cited, just seems unlikely that Oregon would pursue him instead of more experienced candidates (with track records of success at the FBS level) who also have Oregon connections, such as Sumlin or Tedford. Their two current co-ordinators (Cristobal and Leavitt) also have FBS head coaching experience with relatively successful tenures.

I think Wilcox is more likely to be Oregon's next next head coach

Yes, Wilcox as the next next guy for the Ducks.  They need a coach who can draw recruits from outside the West  Otherwise, they're just fighting a zero-sum game with Washington, USC, and a revived UCLA.

Related story.  As the codgers here will remember, college teams used to play preseason games against the alums.  Justin's dad Dave, a famous All Pro defensive lineman and an Oregon alum, returned for the game in 1969.  My former high school backfield mate, later to play for the Rams and Patriots but then the starting halfback for the Ducks, got early call to make a lead block on the edge--the edge occupied by Dave Wilcox.

My friend said he's never felt anything like the impact of the collision.  Not like hitting a human at all, he said.  "A mass of rock, but moving."  He said he ached for almost a week after.

Can Wilcox do that?

The current set of Cal commits for 2018 include 16 guys from Caleefornia, 1 from Washington, 1 from Arizona, and 1 from Indiana.

Wilcox would seem to have obvious Oregon ties, and his first year as head coach seemed promising. However, it would seem from his approach at cal, that Oregon hiring him would entail a notable change in direction.

It would be the ultimate irony if the Oregon, which is grumbling about Taggert leaving after 1 year gets Wilcox to leave Berkeley after 1 year.  If Wilcox takes the job, he should be able to "win now", so long as Herbert can stay healthy.
