The Hunt for Cardinal OC and OL Coach - martyup - 12-08-2017

I thought this subject needed its own thread.  A lot of us have been wishing for a dedicated OC since the debacle in Utah a few years ago.

Re: The Hunt for a New OC - phxfan - 12-08-2017

I really like how the Rams coach calls their plays.  Some in that same mold would be ideal.

I read somewhere that Tavita Pritchard is being considered....

You might have read it in Tom Fitzgerald's column in The Chronicle: http://www.sfchronicle.com/collegesports/article/Offensive-coordinator-headed-to-Rice-12408504.php

Quote:Possible candidates for Stanford’s offensive-coordinator job include quarterbacks coach Tavita Pritchard and Central Florida offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Troy Walters.

I'd love to see a shakeup with Troy Walters.  As for Tavita, none of us really knows his level of contribution behind the scenes, so it's hard to speculate on whether he's a bona fide candidate.  That would seem to be a very insular choice, given that all of Tavita's coaching experience has been with Stanford.  I also don't know why Fitzgerald fails to mention Gould, considering Gould's extensive experience with Tedford at Cal and other places.  Bryce has been effusive in his praise of Gould for helping him improve this year.

In any case, whether it excites fans or not, I think Shaw will promote from within and focus on finding a great OL coach.  Ben Muth's sentiments on Twitter were interesting: "Obviously the OC role is big, but maybe more important than that is who we bring in as the new OL coach. Stanford needs to continue to win up front, lot of guys can call plays with a good OL."

Re: The Hunt for a New OC - Hank 91 - 12-08-2017

I would think they'd have to consider Pritchard for the coordinator job. To not consider him or not offer him an interview would be something of an indictment, don't you think? But it would be equally foolish to promote him without looking around elsewhere. One of Shaw's strengths, in my opinion, has been his hiring of coaches. I've no doubt the process will be thorough.

I will admit, though, that I hadn't considered the potential impact on the offensive line going forward. I agree with the sentiment that that hire is probably more important than the coordinator spot.

Re: The Hunt for a New OC - Hulk01 - 12-08-2017

The OL hire is far more important.  As everyone knows from reading message boards, even a casual fan can call great plays.

Re: The Hunt for a New OC - Phogge - 12-08-2017

Shaw isn't going to hire Walters. Can't divulge the source but you can probably ask around.

Funny!  But all kidding aside, Shaw does not seem to want to give up play-calling.  He does not truly want another cook in his play-calling kitchen.  So the OC role for us has very little impact on play-calling.

Shaw's external hires have been so good that it almost makes internal hires a disappointment. We may have the best DB and RB coaches in the country on staff.

Re: The Hunt for a New OC - winflop - 12-08-2017

Lord help us if Pritchard becomes the OC. Agree the full-time OL coach is the key.

Re: The Hunt for a New OC - Red State - 12-08-2017

I wonder if Greg Roman would be interested in returning?

I don't really understand the Pritchard bashing. None of us really know what his contributions are to the offense beyond his stated role of QB coach. I have no idea if he would make a great OC, though I agree his paper resume doesn't seem to merit the job, but I bet that Shaw knows, and I trust Shaw as a judge of talent.

People seem to dislike his record of QB development, but as others have pointed out, regardless of recruiting, having consistently excellent QB play in CFB is the exception, not the rule. Since he took over, we have had 3 good seasons of Hogan (dip in 2014 notwithstanding), one down year of Burns/chryst, and one up and down year of chryst/costello, but Costello looking great against top competition at the end of the year.

Also, he led the greatest upset ever!

interestingly enough both were let go by their previous employers, Akina not retained when Strong took over at Texas and Gould let go as UCD head coach

Given from what I have seen in the past Tom Fitzgerald, I would guess that this inside information came either from inside his own head or from inside the Cardboard (or other message board).

Quote:I'd love to see a shakeup with Troy Walters.

As many have pointed out in other threads, hiring Walters to be Stanford's OC would either require Shaw to completely alter the fundamental concept that the Stanford offense has been built (and recruited) upon or require Walters to coordinate an offense far different from any that he has experience with.

Both are possible, but I would say this alone makes Walters a long shot; not even considering phogge's repeated hints that the two of them don't get along in some manner.

No I don't.

Pritchard has five years experience as a proper coach (three more as an untitled assistant), all at Stanford. That's very light for an OC position.

If Shaw were to hire internally, I would think that Ron Gould would be a more likely candidate: with about 25 years of coaching experience, a sterling reputation as a RB coach, four years as a college head coach, and 5 years as an Associate Head Coach at a Power 5 program.

Of course that would require that Shaw trusts Gould and that they see eye to eye on how to approach the offense - I have no information on that front.

Totally agree.  I've been putting my money on Gould.  If it's him, then they already know it's him.  It would be impractical and disrespectful to announce the decision this week due to the Bryce Love award tour, in which both Shaw and Gould are participating.  So.... maybe we can expect to hear in the next couple days after their return from New York?

One thing that I didn't expect is that Bloomgren is staying on-board through the Alamo Bowl for one last opportunity to coach the team.  The Stanford Football email newsletter said that Shaw had agreed with Rice to make this possible, but if you think about it, it had to be Bloomgren who made this a priority.  I think it's fantastic and a very classy, selfless move - more than is normally expected in today's coaching carousel.

It seems crazy to me that Bloomgren is coaching Alamo Bowl from the Bloomgren and Rice stand point. It is a critical recruiting time for Bloomgren/Rice.  The Alamo bowl is a nice bowl in Rice's home state where they recruit most of their players, but it isn't the playoffs or the Cotton Bowl.

Re: The Hunt for a New OC - winflop - 12-08-2017

A few other coaches are doing the same. I'm glad it's being allowed by their new employers.

Re: The Hunt for a New OC - 82lsju - 12-08-2017

Walters now officially a cornhusker

Per NU, Walters' salary is $700,000 (up from $350,000 at UCF)

Re: The Hunt for a New OC - oldguy - 12-08-2017

I think getting some national TV time coaching a high powered offense will help Rice recruiting. I hope to see a bunch of Stanford scoring to go along with great defense. A beatdown of TCU would likely mean a lot to recruiting Texas for Stanford and Rice.

Nice discussion and counter points. I'd also like to invoke the synergy concept that if Gould were to be promoted, then they might have the carrot of offering the new Oline coach a title supplementation of "run game coordinator" or similar, as is often done to retain OL coaches, and in some cases to bump their salary by justification of additional responsibilities.
