MSoc: Stanford 1 Indiana 0 (2OT) - 115! -
Viking_Guy - 12-10-2017
Putting up the placeholder, to remind you to set your DVRs if you're not going to be watching live tomorrow.
I want 115 on Sunday and 116 next weekend. I want the Bruins to be looking over their shoulders at the Toejams, having given up on keeping pace with Stanford.
And I want to send an underappreciated winner out in style. Stanford careers will come to an end for Nico Corti (and wouldn't it be nice to send the kid who patiently waited his turn behind Epstein out on top?), Bryce Marion, Corey Baird, Foster Langsdorf, Tomas Hilliard-Arce, and backup keeper Eduardo Palacios Fabre. But give me senior Drew Skundrich, the workhorse, the crunching tackler at midfield, the doer of dirty work, and let him go out a winner.
Go Card.

Anything in particular that we should look for in the early going against Indiana (other than scoring goals and prevent them from doing likewise?)Â What is Indiana's reputation and what are the keys to Stanford doing well?

For me:
(1) Who controls the middle of the pitch? Indiana likes to possess, and both teams use the sidelines. But is there space available for either side in the center channels?
(2) Can Stanford high pressure get Indiana's really good backline off balance?
(3) How is the game officiated? Both teams play an aggressive style, and the game in Bloomington in 2016 was a bit of a brawl - I think there were 6 yellow cards (4 on Stanford) and 1 red (on Indiana, can't remember if it was a second yellow or a straight red.) But that was on the Hoosiers' home pitch, with B1G officials. How will the game be called and proceed?
Beyond that, it's pretty much down to scoring first - both teams have amazing defenses (Indiana's given up 6 goals all year, Stanford 9).
Let's go!

Bryce Marion nearly gave the Cardinal an early lead on a diagonal run, but the keeper for Indiana made a pretty good save. Otherwise, Indiana has had some possession in our defensive third.

Corey Baird nearly went Carli Lloyd chipping the goal-keeper playing a high line, but the volley went wide. Still scoreless.

Good turn from Langsdorf there. Stanford looking in control right now, creating good chances.

Halftime, 0-0.
Indiana controlled the opening 10-15 minutes with possession, and really switched the ball well. They used the Stanford aggressiveness on defense in the midfield with some nice horizontal runs that gave them good change of field, but Stanford's organization for the most part denied any really good chances. The Hoosiers got into space on the wings for crosses, but didn't get a lot of them off cleanly or well.
The latter portions of the half, Stanford began to gain momentum. As mentioned, Marion's diagonal run (and him tucking inside to compress Indiana's width). The turning shot by Langsdorf. And several scrambles in the box - Stanford had 3-4 corners to 0 for the Hoosiers.
The one caveat - the one thing Indiana is doing really well is controlling the air in the midfield - other than Tomas, they are winning the aerial battle. That means a lot of second balls are being settled nicely and turned immediately by the Hoosier midfield, leading to Stanford being out of shape for a few seconds. They haven't been able to take advantage of it yet, but that's the scenario that could generate the ball in behind from an unpressured midfielder.
Offensively, Stanford needs some more commitment from players other than Langsdorf - we've let running balls in the box get away from us because some people were hesitant to "get stuck in" for a physical challenge, trying to step over contact and leaving the ball.
All in all, a solid first half.
Go Card!

2, 10 minute periods with golden goal (first goal wins).

Stanford clearly better over 90 minutes, but haven't found the key to unlock a solid Indiana defense.

Both teams hurt by an inability to build out of defense.
I realize this is college and not La Liga, but still these long balls aren't turning into chances.

I tuned in just in time! That was a pretty awesome steal and shot, great individual effort (though of course the setup was team effort).
I join everyone else in wondering what the deal with the bras is.

Nah, theyre wearable sensors that detect heart rate, etc., and allow coaches to see whos tired and whos worked hard.

I believe the "bras" monitor all sorts of information of the players. If I recall correctly, not just heartbeat but also how much/far they've run, acceleration, etc.

Interesting, hadn't heard of this. Pretty good tech for soccer.
