That's a brobdingnagian win by over 3 seconds in the 4 x 200 or 800 Relay.Â

Bob - thanks for relay clarification. BEC & Spiny: thanks for links so we can play along in real time. Pac12 to do standard job of broadcasting a truncated version a week after it's over?

I see that Manuel didn't swim on the relay, despite being the top individual qualifier in the 200 Free with her time from Pac 12s.
Probably that's nothing new on the health front as she wasn't on the relay at the Pac-12 championship either.
Hope she's feeling well.

By design. She will be on both relays today and also prelim and finals for the 50.

This is an NCAA event, not P12. The P12 Network has no broadcast rights.
NCAA.com says that ESPNU will broadcast finals tomorrow beginning at 5 pm eastern. And ESPN3 will have finals on Saturday beginning at 6 pm eastern.

A new American record in the heat this morning for Stanford in the 200 free relay.Â
I believe you are limited to so many events thus Manuel didnt swim last night. Nor was she needed obliviously
Ledecky first in the 500 free heats today by 6 seconds.

Yeah, you are limited to 7 events, and I think 3 individual.
Since there are 5 relays, Manuel had to be kept out of one, which apparently was the 4x200 free.
There's a passing remark to this effect in this preview from Swimming World:
https://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/news/the-everything-guide-to-the-womens-ncaa-division-i-swimming-champs/
Ledecky first in the heats by six seconds is actually slight progress by the field; she was seeded first by nine - 40 in the 1650.

I'm confident Ledecky was preserving some energy, since her time was 3.64 seconds slower than her best time so far this year, whereas many of the other A final qualifiers were better than or close to their best times of the year. Ledecky didn't have to go all out,but other swimmers had to be close to their best just to make the A final. Both the 8 seed coming in (i.e., the last spot in the A final) and the 17 seed coming in (i.e., just missing out on the B final and thus not scoring any team points) had season-best times in the 1:37:xx range, so margins were tight coming in. Ledecky's best time coming in was
9 seconds better than the 2 seed, so she probably figured she could drop a few seconds and still be the top seed for the final comfortably. No one besides Ledecky has gone sub-1:35 in the 500 free this year, and that held true in the prelims; don't be shocked if Ledecky gets 1:25:xx or better in tonight's final.
Based on the psych sheet, Stanford would have been expected to send two swimmers to the A final (Ledecky and Pitzer) and two to the B final (Drabot and Stevens). That's what we ended up sending, but it's Ledecky and Drabot to the A final and Pitzer and Forde to the B final. Still 4 scorers and the top seed, so the points out of this event should be right about where we'd expect, just with a couple of different names. Forde
just missed out on the A final, too, finishing 15 hundredths of a second out of 8th. I wouldn't be surprised if Stanford netted more points from this event than the psych sheet would have predicted. And the psych sheet is
already suggesting that Stanford wins a repeat national championship by an overwhelming margin this week, so over-performing in individual events is gravy.

The 200 IM and 50 free prelims also met expectations. Ella Eastin was the 5 seed coming in, and had the second-fastest time in prelims, so she'll have a great lane for the A final. Ally Howe was predicted for the B final, and that's where she'll be.
Simone Manuel was the top seed coming in for the 50 free, and she qualified third, so she'll be in good position to win tonight. But it's the 50 free, so who knows what will happen. (No other Stanford swimmers in either the A or B finals, but that was expected.)

Poor Megan Byrnes. Tied for 16th in the 500 free, a grueling race. So she will be in a swim-off this afternoon. If she wins, she swims it a third time tonight in the consolation finals.

So crazy that, for most teams and in many other years at Stanford, Ally Howe would be spoken of as one of the best swimmers in the nation. But on this team she's only, what, the fourth best?

They actually already had that swim, and she missed out by 5 hundredths of a second. Grueling is right--despite swimming hard for a spot in the B final, both swimmers were off by about 6.5 seconds from their first time today, and while Byrnes apparently made a great push at the end, she was
just out-touched by the Georgia swimmer.
Re: Women's Swimming at 2018 NCAA Championships -
ColoradoTree - 03-15-2018
So, to sum up tonight's action, there are five events in the following order:
* 200 (4x50) Free Relay (Hu-Manuel-Pitzer-Howe set an American Record in prelims; Stanford is the top seed for the final)
* 500 Freestyle (Ledecky was the top seed coming in and crushed the field in prelims; Drabot also in the A final and Forde and Pitzer are in the B)
* 200 IM (Eastin had the second-fastest time in prelims; Ally Howe in the B final)
* 50 Freestyle (Manuel was the top seed coming in, and tied for the 3rd fastest time in prelims)
* 400 (4x100) Medley Relay (Hu-Zhao-Engel-Manuel set a pool record in prelims; Stanford is the top seed for the final)
In other words, it would not be shocking if Stanford won all five events tonight. A slight surprise, sure, but Stanford goes into those five events seeded 1-1-2-3-1, and you know Manuel can find another gear for a final.
The events start at 6 Eastern/3 Pacific this evening/afternoon, and the A final in each event is immediately preceded by the B final, so there's at least a
little opportunity for rest for swimmers doubling up events. And there's also the 1-meter diving final, which is on the schedule for after the 50 free and before the 4x100 medley relay.

She lost the swim off by 5 one-hundredths of a second.

Both Stanford and C.al broke the US Open record. But Ally Howe out-touches Abbie Weitzeil by .07 seconds for the win!
