MSwim - NCAA championship thread - Spiny_Norman - 03-20-2018
The men's swimming NCAA meet begins tomorrow with the 800 free relay beginning at 4 pm pacific. Individual events begin on Thursday.
Stanford has been ranked #1 this season, but you would not infer that from the psych sheet. Stanford does not have the top time in a single event. In fact, only one Stanford swimmer has a top 3 time (Abrahm DeVine in the 200 IM).

Stanford's 5 relay teams rank 13th (800 free), 10th (200 free), 10th (400 medley), 18th (200 medley) and 13th (400 free).
Swimswam ranks Stanford #8. The championship looks like a toss up between C.al and Texas.

Well, finished ahead of seed times/places in all swimming prelims Thursday AM. We may not have the numbers, but at least seem to be performing well.

The Hy-Tek site that Spiny linked above has running scores at the bottom of each completed event. So, for right now you'd need to go to the 800 Free Relay as it was the only final event of day 1.
Not ideal as the link to "Latest Completed Event" in the upper left column of the main page also tracks prelims. So, find the most recent "Final" event, click on it and scroll to the bottom for a running score.

Cardinal move up one place in 200 free relay finals and from 8th to 6th place overall. Two in 500 FR A final.

Fourth and 7th in 500 free moves us up to 3rd overall! Will be brief as Dirty Beers have 3 in 200 IM B final and one in A to our 1 in A.

At the close of Day 2 Stanford is tucked in comfortably @ #6. They have been consistently out performing the pre-meet form chart, but do not seem to have any realistic chance of finishing higher, though that will be an improvement of their pre-meet prediction of 8th. Sixth place points for the Directors Cup would not be chump change!
For me, the most striking part of the first two days has been Florida's Caeleb Dressel providing Usain Bolt like performances in the sprints. The flat start record for the 50 free was 18.20 to start the meet. For a heads-up, Dressel slipped a 17.97 3rd leg into Florida's 3rd place qualifying 200 Free Relay. A relay start is worth four to 8 tenths of second depending on how close you cut it, and FL was appropriately conservative in their starts, so, interesting but not shocking. Then he cruised to a US Open/NCAA record 18.11 in the 50 free prelims, and folks really started taking notice.
In today's finals he led off the winning FL 200 free relay with a stunning 17.81; resetting his own US/NCAA record. Two events later he destroyed the field and the record in the 50 free final, winning the race by a body length in 17.63; basically like knocking 6 tenths of a second off the World Record for 200 meters in track. Wow.
What looked like a Texas/Kal shootout has moved into a five way tussle with Florida, North Carolina State and BIG Champs Indiana getting big points in relays and sprints that were not expected. An exciting meet in what appears to be a very fast pool!

Sixth place would be the third best Men's team finish so far this year (after 1st for Soccer and 4th for Cross Country).
Of the five teams currently ahead of Stanford in Swimming, only NC State is within five places in the YTD Directors' Cup scoring.

Finals have moved to ESPN3 for Friday night. Great start for us as Abrahm DeVine knocks 2+ seconds off his lifetime best in winning the 400 IM A Final to grab 20 big points, while breaking the hearts of Kal Krew by taking points from Pac12 meet champ and co-favorite Andrew Seliskar. Sweet!

By the end of Day 3 the team race has somewhat settled into a 3 dog fight between Kal, Texas, and Indiana. Both the Horns and the Hoosiers have multiple divers who have scored in the 1 & 3 meter events while Kal has been relegated to observers for the diving. With platform diving included tomorrow, our despised rival will need to step up quite a bit to win the overall championship.
The Cardinal was game today after DeVine's big win, but mostly picked up single digit awards in B finals. The Trojambs had a strong close in winning the final event - 200 Medley Relay. Those 40 points put them up on us by 15 for 6th place going into the final day. A quick scan of the form charts has SC set up for 20-25 more points than us for the final day's events (excluding 1650). Our chances for reclaiming 6th will rest with DeVine to make a big leap in the 200 Back where his seed time is 12th. Plus, we do have a shot at picking up 20-40 unanswered points in the 1650 that may set up the final 4X 400 free relay for determining our 2018 Director's cup potential for this sport.
