PAC 12 Women’s Golf Championship - BobK - 04-22-2018

Started today in Seattle.  Stanford with a lead after about 9 holes.  The big news Emily Wang minus 7 after 9 holes

Stanford +7 in round 2. now in 5th, 12 shots out of 1st and 6 shots out of 2nd.

weather looks to have not been great and forecast looks colder tomorrow. at 5900 yards and at altitude, I would have expected the scores to be much lower than they've been so far.

Altitude? They are playing in Seattle. Broadmoor Golf Club, not The Broadmoor resort in Colorado Springs.

Altitude? They are playing in Seattle. Broadmoor Golf Club, not The Broadmoor resort in Colorado Springs.

The good news is Wang's rise, from fighting for the 5th slot to top team player in the Pac-12s. Now if Aubert could emerge from her long slump, we would be in great shape for the NCAAs.

I can't see us beating all three of UCLA, Alabama and Arkansas in the stroke portion of the women's event.  But once into match play. Aubert's years of big event and match play experience will be an asset playing at #5.

Bama and UCLA are loaded.

This team is a mystery.  Andrea Lee, who was the #1 rated collegiate golfer earlier in the season, has not finished in the top 10 in a tournament in over 2 months. 

Shannon Aubert, a senior who has been a solid performer in 3 NCAA championships, is really struggling. Her best finish in the spring is T54. It's particularly head-scratching because she played so well in the fall. When you see a drop off like that, you think that maybe an injury is involved. But there have been no public statements of any kind.

Albane Valenzuela is one of the top 5 women amateurs in the world ranking. She played in the women's pro tournament in Palm Springs a few weeks ago and was on the leaderboard into the 3rd round before falling back. She has only sniffed the top 10 in one collegiate tournament this spring.

After the P12 tournament, Stanford will play in the NCAA regionals at Harding Park in 2 weeks. Regionals were supposed to be at Stanford, but the course is not ready for tournament play following renovation work. I know that the players are out there working hard and fighting every round. I hope that it all comes together for them soon.

As long as we're listing the puzzles:

Aubert was the medalist in the US Women's Amateur last summer, and advanced to the second round.

Lee got to at least the second round.

And Valenzuela finished as the runner-up.

And Liu, who's played well, to be sure, is a Rolex Junior All American--a repeater, as I recall.

Bama and UCLA are just as loaded, but they're playing like it.

We certainly hope so. But if you can't make the ball go where you want it, all that experience may not be enough. At the SDSU March Mayhem tournament just under a month ago, Aubert went 0-3 in match play and was our only player not to win a match.

We are even today at holes 14-17 and jumped over both Arizona (+7 today) and Colorado (+9 today). UCLA has a 12-hole lead over the next best team (USC). We are a further 3 holes behind having halved the deficit since this AM.

Hulk, Stanford has quite a roster of accomplished players. I think that all 5 of the Cardinal players in the Pac 12s have finished top 5 in one or more tournaments this year. But I tend to discount summer results as predictors of subsequent spring performance. It's easy to find examples of talented players who had one great summer which ended up as their career highlight. See David Chung 2010 as an example (won the Porter Cup and Western Amateur and was runner up in the US Amateur). We have heard very little from him since.

The head-scratcher to me is that none of the Stanford players have really stepped up this season. Mika Liu (a true frosh) had been Stanford's most consistent performer all year. But she just posted her worst showing of the season at the P12s.  And Aubert continues to struggle, shooting 80 today including 44 on the final 9. Still, all that matters is how you finish. I have great faith that Coaches Walker and Dobashi will have the team as ready as it can be for regionals.

We finish even for the day and jump Arizona and Colorado to third place with Arizona (in fourth) and USC (in second) still on the course. We look likely to end in third though if Arizona gets hot in the last two holes, we could wind up fourth.

USC has 13 holes cumulatively to play. They had 3 holes on us, but I think that lead has extended to 5. Seems doubtful barring a collapse.

I will point out that the 3 most recent NCAA champions (Stanford in 2015, Washington in 2016, ASU in 2017) finished 7th, 6th and 6th in their respective P12 tournaments.
