Baseball Standing/Ranking Notes - CTcard - 04-23-2018
Stanford pulled out a tough, impressive road sweep this weekend. Arizona had been playing very well at home lately, having gone 17-2 at home prior to our series - which included taking two of three from Oregon State.
The conference is starting to turn into the three team race that people were expecting before conference games started - but then got a little derailed with OSU surprisingly dropping a couple of series and UW surprisingly winning.
So, Stanford and UCLA are in a virtual tie for the top spot with Stanford at 12-3, UCLA at 14-4; but UCLA holding a tie-breaker by taking the season series between us. OSU lurks at 10-5. Everyone is fairly hot with Stanford having won its past 6 conference games, UCLA its past 7 (including absolutely abusing $C this past weekend), and OSU only a 3 game streak.
This past week Florida only went 2-2, but they did win a weekend series at RPI #18 Kentucky. Given the general belief that UF is loaded, that was enough to keep them in the top spot in most of this week's polls.
UF is #1 in D1Baseball.com, Baseball America, USA Today; #2 in National Collegiate Baseball Writers poll.
Stanford is #2 in D1Baseball.com and USA Today, #3 in Baseball America, #1 in NCBWA.
Oregon State is #5 in most polls #6 in Baseball America
UCLA is #9 across the board.
Stanford did pass Florida in RPI.
RPI right now is:
#1 Stanford
#2 Florida
#4 Oregon State
#30 UCLA
#38 Arizona
In non-conference opponent watch:
Michigan has now won 20 in a row and leads the Big Ten at 11-0
Texas is #2 in the Big 12 at 11-4.
Fullerton had a rough start but is turning around. Now #2 in Big West at 6-3.
Rice is struggling, near the bottom of Conference USA at 6-10-2

Despite their twenty-game win streak, Michigan is not in the top 25. And their RPI ranking dropped from 49 to 54. Does this mean that Big 10 baseball is relatively weak? Any other explanation?

Well,
The Big Ten isn't all that strong in baseball. It's tough in cold weather states. And Michigan hasn't yet played any of the decent teams.
Before starting their 20 wins in a row, Michigan was only 4-11.
[They started the season with a California swing - losing to San Diego, Arizona, Cal Poly, SDSU, and 3/4 to Stanford]
And this past weekend they swept Penn State, who is 8-25 thus hurting them in the 1/2 of RPI which is opponents' record.

Among Big Ten schools, Indiana ranks around the nation's top ten and Minnesota in the top 25, but that's it. The Carolinas, by contrast, are filled with top 25 teams: NC State, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Duke, Clemson, and North Carolina--and South has a good team.

Regardless of how Michigan is accumulating wins, the fact that it is winning a bunch and we played them a series helps our RPI. The RPI is a flawed system, but given the fact that it typically disadvantages west coast teams, we will take any fluke bumps it provides.

Florida lost last night to Mercer, after losing last week in a midweek game to Jacksonsville and its series final with Kentucky. Gators now have eight losses to the Cardinal's five.

Make that nine losses for Florida now.
Meanwhile, Oregon State and UCLA continue to roll as well.
