Poll: media - admin - 05-02-2018

I'm not thrilled with media insertion with the current media insertion plug-in, or at least its current settings. I'm looking at changing the settings or using one or more different plug-in. However, I'm not sure whether everyone feels the same way I do, so I'd be doing that for naught. 

Please let me know how you'd like to see images, links, tweets, and videos on the boards. Choose up to three options for auto embedding

My concern is I like and value the  editorial/filter function of posters here and I don't mind at all having to follow links.  The easier it is to bring media into the Cardboard, the easier it is just to insert it and go. A flurry of tweets that are posted just because it is easy is my fear. I am a fan of (and enjoy ) so many posters here and their ummm, curation of what is worthwhile is a lasting value-add for all of us.  I'm afraid more people will just throw stuff up there because,....well, hey, they can and its easy. I haven't researched it but will additional media leverage our hosting costs?

In conclusion...harrummph!!

Here are my two cents:

Images: Very strongly support image insertion here.  It is a pain to have to click a link to a picture.  Plus, how would we ever deal without marty's gifs during the game threads.

Videos: In contrast to images, I don't care that much.  Because I'm going to spend some time watching the video anyways, it's fine to have to go off the site to watch the video.  And, if it is a good one, I'll want to watch it full screen (not sure if the current embedded video allows that, or if you have to go to the source to do it).

Links: I actually think link previews are a bug, not a feature.  They take up space, and in any case you can't get the entirety of the linked article from the preview, so we are going to have to click the link anyways.  I suppose it does provide some context for links where the poster simply inserted the link without adding commentary or telling us what is there.  But, as noted by Redrum, if a link preview would lead to more people adding links without context, that would be a bad thing.  I do still want to see semantic hyperlinking whenever a URL is posted.  Would be annoying to have to do that manually or for the reader to copy and paste in the URL. 

Tweets: In contrast to full weblinks, I strongly support embedding tweets.  A tweet is only 140 (or 280) characters, so displaying it in its totality is nice as it avoids having to go wait for the page to load up only to read a very pithy tweet.  I think tweets are very useful for conveying news (like when a recruit commits) quickly, so there is a lot of value in embedding them.  I understand Redrum's fear that this just devolves into a platform for sharing Stanford-related tweets, but I don't think it would be as bad as he fears.

Not that you asked for textual feedback, but I'm with Bos. I like the Tweets and images because there's nothing more to see - the videos and links you probably will want/need to click through anyway, and the embedded videos and embedded links take a long time to load, which causes the page to bounce around on my phone as the image load. They also take up a lot of visual space. I've basically stopped linking to URLs in-line because it makes the post hard to read.

The one other thing I'd love to limit is animated gifs. I find them extremely distracting and make it hard to read text. I don't know if that's possible, but there have been some threads where I can barely stay with them because of all the looping graphics bouncing around in my line of sight. Is there a way to limit them to one spin through before they stop looping? Or a cursor-over way to trigger them? I like that people can post them but in busy threads they can get out of hand.

I have two strong preferences:

YES on EMBEDDED IMAGES. There's a LOT of good information that can be conveyed with one image, and when you have to click a link to view it, the message loses cohesion and immediacy. Some classic images come to mind -- like the epic failure non-call of Stepfan Taylor's crossing the end zone at Notre Dame (which, by the way, is also my logo), or the ESPN tweeted image of empty seats during a home game.

NO on GIANT EMBEDDED ARTICLE CAPSULES (Links?). They are way too big and they are a distraction. I can understand why they fit elsewhere. On many sites, like Facebook, a major source of fresh content is people linking to interesting (funny/compelling/novel) articles all day. Facebook becomes a graphical front page of news and entertainment. I'd like to think here at the CardBoard, linked articles are only one form of content (and a relatively infrequent one), and even then often the main benefits are the observations the Cardboard members make.

Other preferences:
Especially thinking of the future, YES on EMBEDDED TWEETS. Remember many ESPN analysts (and others) share their thoughts and breaking news via Twitter. And many players and former players use Twitter to share thoughts or announcements, like a high school player choosing to commit to Stanford. Or an ESPN analyst learning about a staffing change. I think Twitter will become a bigger and bigger source of sports news, and in size, Tweets shouldn't be too intrusive. It delivers one nugget (usually), which is often complementary to the text/analysis around it, like an image.

And since someone else brought up animated gifs, PREFER YES on ANIMATED GIFs. I've seen some really good football highlights packed into gifs. Who wouldn't want to be able to see this animation on every page?

UNCLEAR on EMBEDDED VIDEOS. Do you mean like embedded Youtube videos? I lean toward not embedding those because the embeds can be large and clunky, and a text description can tell me what I'm going to see. Unlike images and Tweets, which can be complementary to the Cardboard user's text, embedded Youtube videos (like giant article embeds) are large and invite readers to leave the Cardboard site. It's more of an optional excursion -- maybe you click the link to delve more deeply, maybe you just want to stay on the Cardboard to read the poster's summary. But it's an optional departure, even when it's a fantastic, uplifting video like this: Coach Shaw announcing a scholarship for 5th year walk-on Craig Jones in 2015:

Keep in mind that it's possible to embed images even if they're not auto-embedded.

I've installed a different plug-in that auto-embeds videos and audios.

As for tweets, I haven't been able to find an auto tweet embedder, but I have found something that will embed them if you write [tweet]tweet's URL[/tweet]. Would that be acceptable?

I'm of the same mind as people who believe the link previews are more of a bug than a feature.

Considering that on the old board embedding tweets was impossible (at least once you upgraded the software), of course [tweet]tweet URL[/tweet] is acceptable and is an improvement over what existed before.  Yeah, it would be better if there were an auto tweet embedder, just as it would be better if there were cheap flying cars, but if there isn't, I'll learn how to type [tweet]command-v[/tweet].

We really appreciate all the work you do.
