William Nack on Secretariat - terry - 05-16-2018

Sportswriter William Nack passed away recently. A few weeks ago, Sports Illustrated republished his 1990 article about Secretariat and his Triple Crown season. I finally got around to reading it. What a pleasure! This is an outstanding piece of writing. I don't follow horse racing very closely. But you don't have to be a horse racing fan to appreciate this essay. Set aside some time (it's rather long) and enjoy.

I read that article when it came out back in 1990--phenomenal!

Interviewed Nack when we did a 60 story about Doug O’Neill. He truly appreciated the athletic ability of a great racehorse.

Some things you read as a kid stay with you forever (or at least a very, very long time).

For me, that includes Nack's profile of Sonny Liston, elegiacally titled "O Unlucky Man."

Interesting choice of words.  What a Pleasure was a champion thoroughbred sire, whose offspring include Foolish Pleasure.  Foolish Pleasure won the Kentucky Derby and is also famous for being the match race opponent of the phenomenal filly Ruffian.  In that battle of the sexes match race, the filly brutally shattered her leg and had to be euthanized.
