Baseball news and a look ahead - Hulk01 - 05-17-2018

1.  The Chronicle's Tom Fitz reported today that Maverick has a slight fracture of his non-throwing hand and could be back for next weekend's regular season finale. If Tom isn't far off, we should have Maverick in time for the College World Series,which begins June 16, 30 days from now.

2.  Consider Stanford's championship run batting order, along with their OPSs (on base % plus slugging %, one of Bill James' creations)

Branton: .870 (with a .443 On Base Percentage leading off)
Tawa: .850
Hoerner: .880
Daschbach: .945 (with .287 isolated power [slugging percentage minus batting average)
Wulff: .945
Stowers: .970 (.250 iso power)
Matthiesen: 1.280 (.425 iso power.. .492 on base percentage)
Handley: 695
Wilson: .730  

For comparison, Florida won the title last year with a .733 team OPS.  Had their ace made the trip to Omaha, Oregon State might have won the title.  They had a team .791 OPS.

At this point should we assume that we won't be seeing Kinamon or Wulff again this season? 

I reached that conclusion some time ago on Kinamon, but had been holding out hope for Wulff.

Kinamon is out.  Redshirting. 
Wulff pitch hit Tuesday and popped up.  Don’t know if ready to play OF yet

Wulff pinch hit Tuesday.  He's ready but can't be the DH as long as Matthiesen is slugging .787.  

The bet is that before the CWW, coach moves Wilson over to replace Robinson in center and puts Wulff in right.

Miss watching one game and I miss all the news. Hopefully Wulff on his way to being able to play in the OF. 

Any rumors whether Kinamon will come back. Presumably not playing this year won't help his draft status.

I have no knowledge of Kinamon's future, but of the list Hulk put together at the top, we're losing Branton and Hoerner (I think) next year. We'd better enjoy them while we have them!

Duke said he's red shirting.  This may be a way of communicating that he's not entering the draft, because he's very unlikely to come back for a fifth year.  (Next year will be his fourth.)

Could be an extraordinary team next year.
