Weekend baseball - Hulk01 - 05-18-2018

Yes, new thread. Not my idea but an excellent recommendation.

What I'm looking for:
1. Very good starting pitching. Or perhaps that is best written as "a return to outstanding starting pitching.":

2. Clear signs that Matthiesen's streak isn't a streak but just a hotter version of a terrific bat.

3. Chances to see Wulff, which my mean a couple big leads that lead Esquer to insert him early.

4. Solid at bats throughout the lineup, as a sign we might be solid in the post season.

DVR-ing so not watching but as I went to set the recording, I saw Hoerner get hosed on a bad call from a full count--what should've been a BB turned into a backwards K, so instead of 1 out, men on 1st & 2nd, it's 2 away, man on 2nd. :(

0-0 after 1. No more updates from me for a while, but here's hoping we take care of business.

Beck really fighting himself through 4 innings. 3 walks, 3 hits and 80 pitches. Cougs also taking advantage of Handley’s absence with 3 stolen bases already. Only 1 run for the visitors though.

On the positive side, Tawa with a 2-out RBI triple to plate Branton. Daschbach also with a really nice barehanded catch on a popup down 1st base line after WSU runner ran into him and knocked his glove off.

1-1 in the bottom of the 4th.

Good guys have broken it open. 7-1 and looking for more in the 6th.

Game 2 underway. Anyone else confused by the unis? Not very phone screen friendly.

Branton on absolute fire this series (6 for 6).
Doubled in the first and scored. Then doubled in the second to plate Molfetta.
Hoerner drops a bloop double in front of CF (should've been F4, but instead gets an RBI).
Dasch singles to CF (RBI).
4-0!!!

Branton walk (on base 8 times in 8 plate appearances), Tawa single, then Dasch-bomb makes the score 7-0! B4.

We were cruising to a 9-0 score through 8 innings.
Then the wheels came off. I think Esky wanted to give some other arms a chance to show their stuff (I had the volume turned down so I don't really know). But Wazzu scored 5 in the top of the 9th, and now Little is starting to get loose in the 'pen!
Edit: Little came in with two out(?), gave up a single to right that was misplayed, but the batter tried to stretch it to a double and was thrown out at second!
Final score 9-6. Whew. We take the series. Let's play a cleaner game tomorrow!

I guess the silver lining is that Little is credited with a save. Who'da thunk it with a 9-0 score after 8 innings?

Well, the game was pretty clean through 8 (though the seventh apparently ended with some dramatics as well).

In the ninth we had Breuser at first, Decker at catcher, Carter in left field, and Rudd on the mound - who was then replaced by Styles.
Those are things we are not going to see in a competitive game in the remainder of the season ... at least this season.

There were some other unfortunate things in the inning - Grech gave up a big hit and a walk (no outs) and even Little didn't exactly get us out of the inning elegantly.

So the ninth wasn't pretty, but wouldn't appear to be a sign of anything in particular.

Florida was actually swept in a three game series that ran Thursday through Saturday, by unranked Mississippi State.
It's their first series loss of the season, and their last weekend series of the season.
Not sure if they were resting guys before the conference and NCAA tournaments.

Will be interesting to see if there is a change in the ranking. #2 OSU and #3 Stanford have both lost two weekend series but have significantly fewer losses overall.

Florida wasn't resting anyone. They never do; ten guys get at bats and the better pitchers pitch. Everyone else sits and watches.

Florida held out Friday starter Brady Singer and catcher JJ Schwarz this weekend as precautions with minor injuries. The apologists for Florida/believers in SEC baseball supremacy baffle me.

Six weeks ago, I wrote a baseball writer and asked if Stanford didn't have the best starting rotation in college baseball.
No, he said, it definitely was Florida. Two first round picks in this year's graduating class and one, Dyson, in next years.
Since then, Dyson has lost his starting job, convincingly. And his replacement got hammered this weekend.

The Gators have lost seven of their last 14 games, one at home to #136 Mercer, and they just got swept by unranked Mississippi State. But that game, like every game Florida loses in conference, is merely considered added confirmation that the SEC is overpowering--even the bottom half of the conference teams can beat Florida, still clearly the nation's best team!!

And note that the D1 coaches, until Stanford's 1-2 series at Oregon State, gave 12 of 31 first place votes to Stanford. And four coaches ranked Florida third while none ranked Stanford below #2. But it appears few people suspect thaat college baseball coaches might be a good sources of authority on who are the nation's best college baseball teams.

Florida has an excellent team, to be sure. But without question the number one? They lost the series because they were missing the catcher and #1 starting pitcher, so that explains it? Stanford, apparently, has had the benefit of a complete roster this year?

Aggh.

Agree with you on the overall idea, but maybe not on all the details.

Florida might indeed be the best team in college baseball - I have watched them a bit but not enough to really know.
I think their run of weekend series wins is a strong point in their favor, and their lineup is likely to be the highest drafted in the country - or close to it.

But, relatively speaking they have lost a lot of games (15 losses vs 8 for Stanford and OSU).
That's a combination of dropping games (usually single games) to SEC foes [but the SEC is sooooo good] and a handful of weekday games [but they were just giving some of the bench some time, at least pitching].

A few buts ...

I wouldn't put all that much extra weight on the coaches poll. First of all, the coaches are busy preparing their teams to spend a lot of time watching the whole country. Secondly, they are notorious for handing off the job of filling out their ballot to some minion in the sports information office.

On injuries, the issue isn't whether there should be some kind of sympathy for performing without your expected starters, but rather who was missing during your losses who is expected back presently. So, for Florida isn't expecting their #1 pitcher or catcher to be out long. For Stanford, Kinamon isn't going to be playing so his absence should not be factored in any way, Wulff is coming back so his could be, Handley I hope so.

Bloop single from Branton on Senior Day gets us the lead and Tawa singles another run home!

Little K's 2 Cougs and gets closer to coming within 1 of Hock's single season saves record.
4-2 at the stretch!

Little retires all five Cougs he's faced and we head into B8, up 4-2.
