Women's Golf - Stanford at the US Open -
Spiny_Norman - 05-30-2018
Since this is about the only time of year we talk about golf on the CardBoard, I'll take the opportunity to add one other thread.
The USGA is hosting the US Women's Open this week at Shoal Creek GC near Birmingham, AL. The location is notable. In the early 1990s, Shoal Creek was scheduled to host the PGA Championship. But the public was bringing pressure at that time against the USGA and PGA to change the exclusionary (i.e., no women, no blacks) membership policies of the courses that hosted tour events. Shoal Creek agreed to give up the PGA tournament because they refused to give in to the pressure. 25 years later, a lot has changed. Condoleeza Rice is now a member at Shoal Creek among several other black members.
Stanford will be well-represented among the competitors who tee it up for Round 1 tomorrow:
Albane Valenzuela
Andrea Lee
Casey Danielson
Michelle Wie
Stanford recruit Lucy Li is also in the field. Rachel Heck is an alternate.

Angelina Ye, who's committed for the 2019 class, also qualified.

Wei, Lee, Ye, and Li has a certain ring, an age adjusted rhythm, rhyme and reason that is real, resonant, re-assuring and revealing of a Cardinal 'Once and Future Reign' in women's golf.

It's scary to think that male-only, white-only golf courses were a thing during my lifetime. Meanwhile, Stanford's been admitting women and people of color from day one, and day one, was, of course, 127 years ago... +1 Stanford, -1000 Alabama...

2006alum, at about the same time that Shoal Creek withdrew from hosting the PGA Championship, Cypress Point also withdrew from the AT&T rotation. They were not interested in changing their male-only membership policy. As far as I know, they have not changed since then either.

Wikipedia would seem to suggest that shortly after the withdrawal in 1991, our former provost and one-woman, nationwide diversifier Condi was admitted to rectify the absence of black members, which would seem to suggest they also admit women?

Wondered the same thing. She belongs to Augusta and Cypress Point. Others, I assume--Olympic?
Lucy Li -1. Andrea Lee the only Cardinal well off her game, back to back doubles and don't-ask over par.

Cypress Point hasn't been in the rotation in 27 years. It was excluded in 1990. The dirty little secret is that many of the 230 members were not sorry to see the AT&T go. They didn't like giving up the course for the week, and all the prep time prior to the week. Alister MacKenize, who also designed Augusta National and Pasatiempo stated that Cypress Point was his jewel, his most beautiful course, and the only course whose beauty could take your breath away. The CEOs who made up the CP membership didn't want the scrutiny.
Lots of the touring pros felt the same way. Lanny Wadkins refused to come back. Jack Nicklaus said that half the reason to play in the AT&T was gone once Cypress Point was eliminated. Johnny Miller said it was no longer special. Ken Venturi said it wasn't the same feeling. Most touring pros thought Poppy Hills was a particularly inadequate replacment and referred to it as "Sloppy Hills." Fuzzy Zoeller said they should have left it to the deer.
