Panic in the Pac-12 - BostonCard - 06-12-2018

As a conference, we are not keeping up with the Joneses (AKA, the SEC's Big-10s, or even the Big Twelves)....

Quote:The Pac-12 Conference is projected to fall far behind other Power 5 conferences over the next five years in revenue-sharing and won’t even reach $38 million in payouts per school until 2023, according to budget documents recently provided by Pac-12 member Washington State.

Given trends in sports, I wouldn't count on a contract renewal with ESPN and Fox in 2023 to fix things.

While my understanding is that the basic trend the article describes is correct, it's also waving red flags all over the place.

Things that bug me.

Exaggeration:
"Football coach Willie Taggart was making $2.9 million guaranteed at Oregon but moved last year to Florida State, where his contract is $30 million over six years."
Nice reporting of contracts in completely different (and not entirely clear) terms.
I am sure Taggart is making more at Florida State, but Oregon is one school that is neither shy about nor unable to pay coaches large salaries.

Lack of Clarity:
Just what budget documents were "provided by Pac 12 member Washington State" and to whom?
In particular, what did those documents say about the Pac 12 Network?
The gamble the Pac 12 made was that by maintaining full ownership, they would at least eventually make more money from the Network than if they had to share revenue with a partner.
So far, the network seems to be struggling, partly because they don't have a partner that can get them distribution deals. Turning the network profitability around is probably the only real prospect for the Pac 12 to keep in line with the other Power 5 conferences. In the documents provided, I could imagine projections about the network might be anywhere from overly rosy to overly careful. At the very least it seems that should be discussed.

Excess trust in other conference's projections:
While they are far from specific, it seems that the average Pac 12 media rights payout will still be several million ahead of the average in the ACC this year. The falling behind part is from fantastical projections about the success of the upcoming ACC Network.
"“They’re saying this network should have the same kind of return that the SEC Network has had in their first couple of years,"
Maybe. Doesn't seem likely.

-----------------
The bottom line reason why the Pac 12 struggles financially compared to the other Power 5 conferences is their product isn't as popular - perhaps with the exception of the ACC. Maybe that could be changed with clever marketing, but it seems connected to broad sociological issues and a pretty tough nut to crack.

[Just one measure: average home attendance by conference 2017.
SEC = 75,074
Big Ten = 66,227
Big 12 = 56,822
Pac 12 = 49,601
ACC = 48,442]

Also, isn't the difference in revenues close to what in lost in the couch over at the Development office on campus?

Maybe for Stanford, but not so much for OSU, WSU, Utah.....etc. Conference health is not trivial for us.
