Or NOT so outside...Mike Leach - Redrum - 06-22-2018

First, let me Mirandize you:  this is not intended as a political post even though its subject managed to dive in head first all on his own.  It's a Mike Leach post.  There's been a durable viewpoint around here (for years) that Mike is a kind of lovable mad-man.  Maybe this makes him a little less lovable but at least the guy is consistently veering outside the lines. (If this still seems too political, some greater power will nacht und nebel it.)

There is no way around it, Redrum.  Yours was a political post that violates the rules.

Having said that, thanks for sharing.  I’ll stop there before I go off on a multi-paragraph rant about the current state of affairs.....

Well, if it had been the head coach at ,say, Missouri, or Connecticut, or Michigan State I wouldn't have bothered to post it.   Maybe ,but highly unlikely , another Pac12 coach or, ahem, Michigan coach.  My focus was on Leach.  As it is, his mouthpiece and #1 fanboy Teejers might reappear on the Cardboard just to serve a summons on me for defamation.

I'll just say this, which I think is in keeping with the board's policy on keeping politics from seeping into the Board: it seems to me Leach has far more to lose than to gain from doing this, and since it's outside of his professional wheelhouse, why bother? Why not keep your head down, do your job, and and make your contributions where your talents lie. There's no doubt some members of his team (not to mention the administration, alumni, and fans) trust him less now, and for what? No one is going to hire Leach to be a politics correspondent, so why even go there?

And that's just how I feel about the Cardboard: I've got a million places I can go to get whatever viewpoint I want on today's current affairs. There is no where else to get better passionate reporting, analysis, and discussion about all things Stanford than here.

Here's a Seattle Times article with a screen shot of the original tweet and some of Leach's responses.

If you think about it, that whole twitter exchange - Redrum - 06-22-2018

That twitter exchange and defense...is vintage Leach.  Style, voice and defense-by-offense reminds of how Leach defended himself against football criticism while at Texas Tech.  In this case he and the object of his affections cut from the same cloth.  But actually all I care about is the success of Stanford football.  If Leach were to lose his football mojo wouldn't break my heart to see him cart his talented *** to some other conference.

I am happy to say that I’ve dissed on The Leach long before this latest drama.

In the thread last fall, when he was rumored to be headed to Tennessee, I wrote: (sorry these were written during a no apostrophes phase)
“I feel bad for Tennesses fans. I don’t think they know what they’re getting.

His odd behavior is barely passable in the wildlands of the Palouse, but I think it’ll harm a big time program. His quirks are going to work less and less in the world of hot mics and viral videos. He is going to have more and more difficulty recruiting  when high schoolers can pop onto Youtube see what a child they’d be entrusting their futures with, and his oddness will at first nonplus, then ultimatly alienate, any major booster financial support base.

Anyway, if it’s true, good luck to Tennessee. Don’t say you weren’t warned.”

And in October, before the Wazoo game, I wrote:
“Or maybe he is hoping the media won’t notice he just blew a game by playing a rookie qb instead of his H)eisman candidate multi-year starter. Or maybe Wazoo will be distracted and won’t notice that with the way he behaves, it’s going to get harder and harder to get good recruits and things are only going to go downhill.

Just ignore him.

Leach knows he’s on the hot seat, that his AD protector is gone, and that a program like Nebraska would never, ever hire him.“

I would argue the latest drama is on-topic, not because of the politics, but because Leach is a drama queen. He has the maturity of a child, and he cannot stay on-topic and keep off the social media.

His antics, drama, and childishness are going to be captured more and more on social media — Wazoo actually lost a lot of what would have been key returnees this year to transfers. They will lose more and more recruits because of it, and that will show up more and more in the wins and losses, and ultimately, in his employment.

Got to say, seeing this disappointed me. I've been a Leach defender for a long time. He's never done anything terribly destructive to others (James incident seems inconclusive). He marches to the beat of his own drummer and many such people get castigated because they are different, or maybe not as politically correct, refined or what have you, as the masses would prefer.

But spreading falsified videos to fit some agenda you have, is not something any university should tolerate. Ever.  This is like a professor falsifying research. There are certainly examples - like the SPE expose on this board recently - of this happening, but when it is so transparently obvious like this Leach episode, it is hard to imagine how it can be forgiven from someone who is such a visible representative of the university.

Washington State has outplayed Stanford three straight seasons and has a two game W streak.  Would be nice to end that this season.
