Jackson, Gearrin dealt to Texas -
wallendar - 07-08-2018
Gearrin and Jackson and a minor leaguer have been traded to Texas for a player to be named or cash.
Steven Duggar and Ray Black were brought up to replace them on the roster. This frees up some cash to make another move at the trading deadline. SF is now about $2.3M below the CBT line.

The Rangers really wanted Jason Bahr, a solid prospect who pitches for San Jose, and SF leveraged that interest into a salary dump. IMO, a good gamble by Evans and Co.

I would have accepted a case of rosin bags and a bag of old BP balls for Gearrin and Jackson. Duggar and Black will be an improvement no matter what they do.
Duggar started in CF today, led off and is 1 for 4 with a double so far, end of 6th. Giants finally gave Bum some run support and he left in the 6th after 101 pitches, leading 6-4. Then they scored 5 more in the bottom of the 6th to break the game open.
Black was rated one of the organization's top pitching prospects a couple of years ago but has been off the radar lately. He has high heat and will undoubtedly be used in the bullpen.
Yesterday they called up SS Chase d'Arnaud from Sacto when they put Panik on the DL. He's 31 and has a career BA of .223, only 457 ABs with 5 different clubs in 7 years. Kind of a puzzling move since they sent Tomlinson down and he's at least that good.

Just saw the replay of Duggar’s first MLB hit, what wheels he has! So the ball comes back to the infield, the Cards toss it to the Giants 3rd base coach, who then tosses it to someone in the Giants dugout....who then turns around and tosses it up to someone in the stands! Wow, I hope Duggar was ok with that. Let’s hope he gets 2000 more.

Just a joke not the ball he hit

Here’s one especially for you and Phogge, Bob:
Name the four SF Giants who hit a HR in their first MLB AB. (All were with SF at the time)

I can give you the easy one for me and it has a Stanford connection. Will Clark against Nolan Ryan in the Astrodome. It was opening day 1986 and the Giants game was on in the lounge at Am Stud. I wandered over to check it out and remember saying "Hey, this is that kid they've been talking about at Spring Training." He ends up hitting a home run to deep center field. Will the Thrill was born on that day for me. I will never forget his epic battle against Mark Grace of the Cubs in the playoffs in 1989. I know there were a lot of other players involved but it felt like a one-on-one battle between Clark and Grace.
Alen Hanson hit a three run home run this year for the Giants in his first at bat but I think he had been in the majors for the Pirates at some point.
Cheers,
Pete F.

That's an old joke. The player who throws the ball into the stands switches the ball. Later, during the game, they showed the switch.
And Duggar ended up two for six for the day with a run scored. I'll tell you what, that outfield now has speed across the board. All three outfielders (Duggar, McCutchen, Hernandez) have played CF. There were several fly ball outs to LF that Duggar would have been waiting patiently for.

Buddy Kerr, Whitey Lockman, Hoyt Wilhelm, Les Layton and Bill White. Oh wait, those are the NY Giants.

The only one I remember was The Count of Montefusco.
Besides Wilhelm who is the only other Hall of Farmer to homer on his first at bat.

Johnny Boo Lamaster in his first AB. An inside the park no less
Wilhelm never hit another
McCovey got three off the wall

Mac debuted against Robin Roberts and went 4/4 with two triples. Was up for less than half a season and won Rookie of the Year.

You guys are pretty good. As Mick knows, this one is actually pretty easy to look up. There were 118 MLB players who have done this. 30 of them (including Campy Campaneris) did it on the first pitch.
The 4th SF Giant was....Brett Pill in 2011.
I remember listening on the radio to Clark’s HR off Ryan. IIRC he took a strike, than put the next 100 mph fastball into the bleachers.
And I was listening the day McCovey went 4for4 off Robin Roberts. Two triples and two singles. And this was the year after Cepeda came up. They tried moving Orlando to third, then to LF, and eventually they put Willie in LF.
An extra hint to Phogge’s question: the HOF’er also played professionally in SF.

One of McCovey’s singles was off the right field fence

It was hit off the Emerson TV sign although the Giants painted over the sign in 1958.

Six HOFers played in McCovey’s debut.
Mac, Roberts, and four others.
Who were the other four guys?

Went through the possible batting order (no memory for any freshman classes but remember my Topps Cards ‘52-‘60) and the light came on. Sparky.
