Oh man do I hate the black outline on the numbers.  KEEP IT SIMPLE:

White numbers/letters on cardinal jerseys, cardinal numbers/letters on white jerseys. White pants.  Done.

It's not exactly new either. Haven't they done this at various points?

I agree, it doesn't improve the look.

Bobbbbbb, remember the mid Fifties experiment Stanford tried by painting a horizontal red stripe across the back of eligible receivers helmets? Was worth a Bill Leiser column in the Chron (a great paper back then).

I still like the old simple unis with no malarkey on them. Except for the ones used in South Bendover.

This is a troubling development. I recall seeing the black outline to the numbers in the early to mid 2000s, in the era of the coaches whose names I will not say. I don't want to be reminded of those years ever again.

RE: jerseys get a new (old?) look this fall - ChicagoCard - 07-25-2018

Those mid-2000s uniforms were awful. They wore them through 2007, not sure when they were first worn. I hope they don't make the red a lighter color for greater contrast. I doubt the professional preview photos really show what they will look like. And, am still curious if the outline will appear on the away jersey.

As long the names of the players are on the  back of the jersey I’m happy.

Yes, outlined in black :).

I don't mind it.  I think it makes the numbers pop.

I like this too!

Barf.

This is a prime example of a terrible trend in sports, what the blog Uni Watch defines as, “Black For Black’s Sake” — or BFBS
. When a team gratuitously adds black to their uniform design even though black was never one of their team colors.

Notice how...
- None of college football's elite teams (Alabama, Penn State, USC, Clemson, LSU, Florida) permanently adds black to its uniform?
- Within a year of junking the 2002-2007 black-trimmed unis, Stanford returned to a bowl game for the first time...since its last year without them?

The first step to playing like the Buddy/Wlat years is dressing like them.

I take issue not only with these uniforms, but also anyone who defends them.

I don't know... these uniforms seemed to work:

I like it.  The thin black trim around the numbers makes them stand out better and doesn't change the basic look of the uniform at all.  It would be different if they had a thicker black trim or if they had the offset look with a really thick black band on two sides to add fake depth.  This looks sharp.  As a person who has had to live my life with some vision deficits, I always like changes that add sharp contrast elements.  (I realize that this view is personal.)

As for the all black uniforms (the gun metal black with the silver logo helmet), I don't love them but the players do.  I think it is a good idea to give the players the choice of when to wear the "special" black uniform once a year as we have been.  I have long had Stanford hats and shirts that are black and the cardinal and white world did not vanish.  I don't believe the uniforms have anything to do with our winning or losing but we have done pretty well in the all black unis over the last few years.

Cheers,
Pete F.

Alt-Black for one game out of 13 is fine.

Every game with black is uncalled for.

RE: jerseys get a new (old?) look this fall - winflop - 07-26-2018

I care far, far more about the player wearing the jersey than the outline on the numbers, but I actually like the black outline on the numbers.

I also like that the team can choose one game in which to wear the all-blacks. I think the larger logo will look good on the new helmet and the silver color will shine in the lights - presuming they wear the all-blacks at a night game.

But for me this is all trivial compared to the quality of play on the field.

RE: jerseys get a new (old?) look this fall - Mick - 07-26-2018

I always liked the white on white, never liked the red on red (too Fresno State for me), never really liked the black on black, but I can put up with it once a year.

I remember the first time I was struck by the simple clarity of a red jersey over white pants.  Brad Muster wore it in a Sports Illustrated "Touchdown Tommy" article.  I was amazed at how perfect the uniform was.

For a moment I thought Brad Muster was photo-bombing Tommy Vardell ... in 1992, well ahead of its time.
But, alas, it seems to have been merely a brain short circuit.

RE: jerseys get a new (old?) look this fall - OutsiderFan - 07-26-2018

The black outline is ONLY reasonable if it helps viewers see the numbers better.  I have no idea if it does or doesn't, but the BFBS is just plain wrong.  I remember Tennessee did this a few years ago too.  And guess what, they dropped it because it was lame. They are now back to straight white on orange. Stanford will do the same thing in a few years, like it did 10 years ago, so why change it?

RE: jerseys get a new (old?) look this fall - SamuelMcF - 07-26-2018

My goodness, the amount of b****ing and moaning (on multiple sites) is just infuriating to me. I think it looks pretty clean, and will help with reading the numbers. Plus I don't think this was Stanford's idea; Nike makes the unis.

RE: jerseys get a new (old?) look this fall - ChicagoCard - 07-26-2018

I was thinking about how so many teams have different uniform combinations, and to a lesser extent other teams make incremental changes, why not SEC teams. If it's about big money apparel contracts, why not in the SEC?

RE: jerseys get a new (old?) look this fall - CompSci87 - 07-26-2018

The changes probably help Nike and the other uniform suppliers sell more jerseys to fans who want the latest look. Or at least Nike thinks they do. Pro teams in various sports are doing the same thing.
