Summer golf - more results - bbm233 - 07-27-2018

A couple of our men's golf seniors-to-be are tearing up the Pacific Coast Amateur, one of the elite tournaments of the summer, being played on the Lake Course at the Olympic Club in SF. Isaiah Salinda shot a course record 62 in the third round and is 3 shots clear of second place heading into the final round. Brandon Wu is in third, having shot under par in all three rounds. There are several top 10 world amateurs in the field.

Salinda took him the title and Wu finished solo third. The best result ever for both players, as world #1, 2, 3, 6 and 9 were all in the field.

To have any chance of getting to the match play portion of the NCAA's we need both these guys to play consistent golf, no more three good rounds and a poor to awful round.  Plus we need three other guys to step up and play and give us at least one sub par round that counts and a fourth who adds a round at or very near par.  

Out of our three best career average golfers, McNealy, Rodgers and Woods.  Only Woods has left a mark on the PGA books.  Rodgers is making a nice living on the PGA tour, but seldom appears in the top 10, and when he does, he too can't put 4 good sub par rounds together.  McNealy is still trying to get off the Web.com tour, and seems to be missing the cut far too often.  I hope he can get his game back together.  Cameron Wilson and Joe Kribel seem to have pretty much given up on professional golf from what I have read.

The step up from a winning amateur to a winning pro is significant it seems.  I sure hope the light has gone on for our guys and it stays on this coming season.

Wu and Salinda have continued their world-class amateur play at the Western Amateur (in this case, "Western" means Chicagoland). This is truly the elite preparation tournament for the US Amateur. Both of our guys have finished in the top 5 of the stroke play portion (72 holes) and will be moving on to the 16 player match play rounds.

Wu is getting these excellent results at exactly the right time, as he figures to be a lock to move into the world top 50 before the final US Amateur cut-off (came into the Western at #54), which makes him exempt. In his qualifying tournament, he had finished as an alternate, and alternates rarely get in. Salinda was already in the US Amateur courtesy of the results of his qualifying tournament.

bbm233, do you know what Andrea Lee is doing? She is not in the field for the US Women's Amateur that starts next week. As far as I can tell, she has only played two events all summer, the Curtis Cup in June and the Arnold Palmer Cup in July. She did not compete in the Southern California Womens Amateur where she was the defending champion. Makes me wonder if perhaps she is injured. Or maybe she just wants a break.

The US Womens Amateur field will include Albane Valenzuela and Mika Liu from the current Stanford roster and commit Rachel Heck.

Sorry, I don't have any inside info on the women's team. If anybody is playing the Stanford course regularly, they could probably find out from the staff there.

Mixed results in match play at the Western Amateur:
Isaiah Salinda lost his round of 16 match 2 and 1. He was -1 on his round.

Brandon Wu won two matches to earn a trip to the semi-finals tomorrow morning. He crushed his opponent in the round of 16, 6 and 5. In the quarterfinals, he was two down with two to play but won three holes in a row to earn the victory. His semi-final opponent is the top seed based on the stroke play results.

Thanks for sharing that great article.  Now we just need to find three more guys, two of whom play well enough each round to keep us from counting too big a number.  The Summer play of Wu and Salinda give me hope.

US Women's Amateur qualifying round 1 results:
Ziyi Wang - 67 (edit to add her; missed her in my first scan of the results)
Albane Valenzuela - 68
Lucy Li - 68
Mika Liu - 71
Rachel Heck - 74

After tomorrow's round, the low 64 players will advance to match play. Valenzuela was the runner up last year when the tournament was played in San Diego.

The tournament this year is being played at the Golf Course of Tennessee just west of Nashville. It is only a 3 hour drive from Heck's home in Memphis.

US Women's Amateur final stroke play qualifying results. 3 Stanford players and one top recruit advance to match play.
Lucy Li - 68 - 65 = -9 (she tied for medalist and is the #1 seed in match play)
Ziyi Wang - 67-73 = -2 (#32 seed which means that she is opposite Li and will play her if both win their first match)
Mika Liu - 70-72 = even par (#42 seed vs Annabell Fuller in the first round, a 16 year old from England)
Albane Valenzuela - 68 - 75 = +1 (#51 seed vs. Bianca Pagdanganan in the first round, a member of Arizona's national championship team)

Rachel Heck - 74 -74 = +6 - did not advance

2019 commit Brooke Seay (-3) also advanced easily.   2021 prospect Rose Zhang is is the nine-golfer playoff for the 64th spot.

As expected, his third place finish at the Western Amateur put Wu into the WAGR top 50 at #41. If I understand the exemption rules correctly, that means that Wu has qualified to be at Pebble Beach on Sunday to play in the men's US Amateur. Congratulations to Brandon.

Yes, Wu is in, along with Salinda and Huang.  Conrad will have a nice week in Pebble Beach.

Ashwin Arasu is also in by winning a qualifying tournament. 

I can't find anything that confirms that Huang qualified. He's not exempt via ranking and I don't seem him listed on the USGA site as having done well enough in a qualifying tournament. But if he did, that would explain why he is still playing as an amateur.

Tough day for Stanford golfers in the women's Amateur round of 64.

Mika Liu made 3 double bogeys, was +6 and lost 2 and 1
Ziyi Wang did not make a single birdie all day and lost 4 and 3
Albane Valenzuela fell behind 2 down on the front 9, fought back to a 1 up lead after 10 holes, but could not hold it and lost 1 up

incoming frosh Brooke Seay was 1 down with 5 to play then won the next 3 holes. She closed out her opponent 2 and 1.
Top seed Lucy Li was all square through 6 then pulled away. She won 5 and 3.

If Seay and Li both win in the morning, they will face each other in the afternoon round of 16.

In the round of 32, incoming frosh Brooke Seay fell to incoming ASU frosh Ya Chun Chang 2 and 1

Lucy Li blitzed her opponent 7 and 5. She faces Chang this afternoon.

The Stanford women are now out of the Women's Amateur. We'll see if the men do better next week.

Do you know what's up with Andrea Lee? She has dropped out of sight over the last month.
