We had some tense moments but the winds shifted a couple of days ago and now the fire is charging west into the Trinitys and Weaverville. Can't believe the devastation....104,000 acres and 800+ homes burned up, including some belonging to friends. When I did news I'd try to give folks a picture of what that acreage meant, so here goes: it's a swath a mile wide and about 178 miles long...with 4 homes burned every mile.

I'm pretty sanguine about leaving tomorrow for a cattle auction in Wyoming....the wife, maybe not so much. Thanks for thinking of us.

Great to hear...but apparently some of your compadres in the protein-on-the-hoof biz aren't as sanguine.  They've already named their little piece of heaven to the west along Route 299...Burnt Ranch.  It's right there on the map.

And they say farmers are the ultimate optimists.
