WSoc - the title defense begins - Spiny_Norman - 08-17-2018

Women's soccer begins its season today at Davis. It took 9 minutes to score the 1st goal. And another 9+ minutes for the 2nd goal. Scorers - Xiao and Davidson. Davis has yet to record a shot on goal.

Spiny, great minds think alike.  This is what I posted pretty much simultaneously. <grin>

Women's soccer is opening up their defense at Davis, and is currently leading the Aggies 2-0 about 24 minutes in behind goals for Michelle Xiao and Tierna Davidson.

The Aggies are a pretty solid team (middle of the Mountain West last season), and Stanford is missing some young guns (Kiki Pickett and freshmen Sophie Smith and Naomi Girma, I think), who are returning from a disappointing U-20 World Cup (U.S. eliminated in the group stage, going 1-1-1 while Japan went 2-0-1 and Spain went 1-0-2).

Seems like a continuation of last season - Stanford has 8 shots, 3 on goal, to goose eggs for UC Davis thus far.

Stanford wins 5-0.

If they played for another school, I think the Stanford Women's Soccer Team's second string would be a top ten team.  This team is absolutely loaded.

One other thing I think might be happening, at least from the GameTracker flow - Paul might be adapting a little more of Jeremy's tactics.  It felt like Stanford was putting on some high pressure with the forwards and midfielders - they were subbing off regularly. and it felt like the ball rarely left the Aggies' defensive third.

And I forgot to include Hiatt (with the U-20s) among those who didn't play today.  And, oh yeah, some woman from Brazil who was ESPN's player of the year.

Man, this team could be good.

yeah, if we can sub forwards and midfielders regularly, that's going to be hell on our opponents, not just at the end of the game but also in the first part of each half when our players know they don't need to save anything.

Okay, this from the game notes, is pretty nuts:

Stanford's streak of not allowing a goal from open play extended to 2,078:59 minutes.

That's what, 23 games without a goal off anything but a set piece, IIRC mostly corners.  I guess that's Florida in Gainesville last year?  In those 23 games, they've conceded a grand total of 6 goals.  While scoring 80.  My goodness.
