Football Open House Sun 19 Aug 2018 - 82lsju - 08-19-2018

Stanford will host its annual football open house Aug. 19.

- Open practice at the Elliott Practice Fields from 3-5:40 p.m. PT (subject to change).

- Freshmen and sophomores will be leading a clinic on the field for youth in sixth grade and below from 5:45-6:30 p.m. PT.

- The women's soccer team will also be running drills on the practice field as well.

- Juniors and seniors will be available to sign autographs from 6:15-7 p.m. Free posters will be distributed.

Stopped by the practice for about 45 minutes, practice was in helmets, shoulder pads and shorts while I was there. The first part I saw was 7-on-7, later they went to 11-on-11 but not a real scrimmage. My limited observations

- Bryce Love participated and seemed to be 100%. No "low speed" limp that we saw the end of last season. He also caught several passes out of the backfield

- Connor Wedington caught several passes from both the slot and split out wide

- Costello, Mills, Richardson, and West all had reps at QB.

- Burkett was on the field but did not participate (and was without helmet and shoulder pads)

- several DBs (Antoine, Butler, and I'm spacing on the 3rd one) did not participate

the team also no longer appears to use a camera and a person on a scissors lift, they now have a camera on a large telescoping pole with a person in the base of the pole (bad description) watching on a screen and controlling the view with a joystick.

"Alijah Holder and Paulson Adebo were the starting corners and Ben Edwards and Frank Buncom IV were the starting safeties."

I would assume Holder is back.

Mills and Costello look sharp and it would be interesting to see how our receivers (JJ, Irwin, Stewart, Wedington, Fehoko) perform this season. Fehoko had some nice catches and Love also caught the ball in a stick route.

He threw for roughly 27 touchdowns and 270 yards, mostly YAC...

... at the post-scrimmage clinic for kids. The freshman and sophomore receivers inspired some phenomenal end zone celebrations from a raw but talented group of potential recruits for the Classes of 2029-2033.

Prior to that, I vaguely remember seeing St. Brown running with the 2's in the scrimmage, but he wasn't all that noticeable. (In fairness, I didn't know his number until later.) It's clear that Fehoko is ahead of him in the rotation for now.

Well all the injury reports are depressing but overall the updates made me feel excited.

#1) I was getting worried because I hadn’t heard anything about Mike Williams in a while, and was beginning to wonder whether he’s back. Very good news to hear that he and swann are both doing well, and That Jackson has improved. For Swann to be “three times better” that sounds like a big leap. I was unsure of the wording about Williams, calling him one of the top interior guys — uh, they only have like 3 (williams dwp peek) so being one of the top three doesn’t sound special, unless he meant williams is one of the best few in recent years (ie including people like Phillips), then that would be monster news. What happened to Bo Peek?

#2) it sounds like Costello is really making progress, which is very exciting. I think the conventional wisdom is that progress by the d-line and quarterback are the most critical to realize the highest hopes. And it sounds like it is good news on both of those fronts.

#3) very glad to hear love is back to full speed and back to his unstoppable self
