Bryce Love Article on The Athletic -

Chantel Jennings has a great article on Bryce Love over at the Atlantic. (Yes, it's behind a paywall, but it's completely worth it.) One thing that's been evident about Love, maybe because he talks about it often, is the preparation that he does. There's a perception, I think, that running backs do what they do purely because they're great athletes. See the hole, hit the hole. Love has spoken a lot about how much Coach Gould has done for hm, and this piece does a great job explaining everything that's gone into making Love as great as he is -- Gould, Turley, Shaw, everybody. Anyway, here's the link:

Thanks for sharing! Not exactly sure how it works but I was able to view the story when I downloaded the app onto my phone, without actually having to sign up for any plan. I suspect it was a one time courtesy.

I signed up for a trial of The Athletic to read a couple of articles, and to my surprise I got hooked. They produce a ton of interesting, in-depth sports articles. Such a contrast to the hot takes and superficial cookie-cutter stories you find most places today (including print newspapers, sadly).

Very fun article to read. I noticed that a lot of the 50+ yard runs came with 8 in the box and the DBs crashing at the snap of the ball. The 'second level' was virtually non-existent for obvious run plays last year. Once Bryce got to the second level, there was no chance of stopping him. I wouldn't be surprised if Bryce cannot replicate the ridiculous 13 runs of 50+ yards this year. I also do not think that is necessarily a bad thing.
Everything I've read indicates Tavita will be more creative with Love this season. Coupled with improved QB play, it will be difficult for defenses to send 11 men at the line of scrimmage in obvious run situations.
*Also, I love The Athletic. It's the only place I can find great college football and hockey analysis which isn't always in high demand.

I had held off on subscribing to The Athletic for some time, as I could still find good sportswriting from many other sources, even after Fox Sports "pivoted to video." But as ESPN has slashed writing staff, other outlets have had cutbacks, and my local paper (The Denver Post) is a shameful shell of itself due to hedge fund owners who have reduced the newsroom below minimally acceptable levels, the sportswriting I
was still seeing seemed of lesser quality and reduced quantity. So I jumped in a week or so ago. And for $3.50/month, I get
everything. National analysis of every sport, in-depth coverage of my NFL teams (Vikings and Colts, due to Andrew), and advanced analysis that caters to the more informed fan (like NFL tape breakdowns to help illustrate a particular point about why certain blocking schemes are effective against certain fronts, or why particular players are either exceeding or falling below past standards). It's terrific.
I'd been flirting with the idea for a month or so now, but they added one of my favorite Vikings bloggers (who does great tape analysis and pre-draft work) and one of the Indianapolis Star's Colts beat writers whose stuff I read and enjoy regularly. I think of it like subscribing to SI, and in that sense, it's more than worth it. Sportswriters gotta eat, too, so I might as well pay for a better product I enjoy rather than free ride and consume a lesser product. (I prefer to consume sports through live events and good writing; I'll watch the occasional highlight package, but I'm rarely interested in watching videos of talking head segments.)
It's not like there's a daily article about Stanford from a dedicated beat writer (heck, we don't have that as it is), but with SI alums Bruce Feldman and Stewart Mandel and ESPN Pac-12 Blog alum Chantel Jennings, we'll still get talked about, especially if we're relevant nationally.
ESPN still has some good writers, but that site is so *loud* with ads and video clips that it's a relief to visit an ad-free homepage of just articles.

Based on this review, and the "sponsored ad" I saw on facebook that the 50% off deal was ending soon, I signed up as well. Good to see Lombardi and Mandel articles again. I think it's worth it. And no, I don't work for them, nor do I get anything for endorsing them. :)

After the endorsements above I signed up too. I've left this thread open a couple times intending to sign up but hadn't yet, what finally pushed me over the edge was seeing an inane "WHICH TEAMS CAN WIN THE PLAYOFF???" article in the ESPN Stanford feed, realizing that it was the only article they've posted there in ages, and that it won't get better. I miss the old team. Stupid penny-wise pound-foolish ESPN.

On three different occasions this summer, an ESPN writer had to edit an article that claimed Washington either won the P12 North or the P12 last season. That's just lazy.

I think it is even worse than that. The ESPN people do this for a living. The idea that they don't know who won every P5 championship off the top of their head is proof they are just incompetent. If you are a professional, there is a knowledge base for what you do. If you lack that baseline, you shouldn't be in the field. This error should never have been made in the first place. The author's opinion is based on a false premise. Correcting the premise doesn't correct the conclusions.
