Stanford XC that is.
First meet a very low key on Saturday in SF then off campus for 2 weeks or so of training.
Stanford Men are picked # 2 in the West and the Women # 1 in the West. National ranking aren't out yet but Flotrack is doing a count down of both teams and individual rankings. They are on # 17 for all today.
From a site:
No. 2 Stanford Cardinal (4th in 2017)
SR Grant Fisher (5th in 2017)
SO Thomas Ratcliffe (Redshirted 2017)
JR Alex Ostberg (16th in 2017) Ranked # 17 in the nation by FloTrack
SR Steven Fahy (17th in 2017)
FR D.J. Principe (Redshirted 2017)
The Stanford men will be scary good in 2018. They return their entire top seven, including three from the top 20 (Fisher, Ostberg, and Fahy). But what makes this team 2018 contenders is the addition of Thomas Ratcliffe and D.J. Principe waiting in the wings. Ratcliffe redshirted this year due to injury, but has proven he's a potential All-American talent after placing eighth at the 2016 Pac-12 XC Championships and running a 7:53 3K at the 2017 UW Invitational. Meanwhile, D.J. Principe was a top-tier recruit for the Cardinal this past year after running a four-flat mile and 8:14 3K.
No. 1 Stanford Cardinal (4th in 2017)
JR Fiona O'Keeffe (13th in 2017)
SR Courtney Smith (Redshirted 2017)
JR Christina Aragon (38th in 2016)
SR Elise Cranny (57th in 2017)
FR Nevada Mareno (Redshirted 2017) Actually she left the team last Dec. Homesick and now running at North Carolina State.
On paper, the Stanford women's roster has the most talent, and that talent should come into fruition with a team title next year. The Cardinal will return five from this year's fourth-place team, but also add three key players for next year: Harvard transfer Courtney Smith, who redshirted this season to save eligibility and should be a top-20 contender; highly touted recruit Nevada Mareno, who will make her debut as a redshirt freshman; and, like every year, the Cardinal have a great recruiting class headlined by Rebecca Story.

Glad to see the cross country teams building back to the top tier of competition. I am particularly happy to see that the classes are pretty balanced and not dependent on a single great class. Thanks for the updates Bob!
Cheers,
Pete F.

Stanford men are ranked 4 and the women 3 so far although most schools haven't run yet, so call them pre season rankings.
FloTrack is doing a count down of the top 25 teams and individuals. They are down to # 10
Ranked 10 for the Women is Fiona O'Keeffe
Ranked # 17 is Alex Ostberg for the men and # 14 Steven Fahy
The teams are now training in Bend Oregon with the next meet at home at the end of the month. The first meet was a low key meet last Saturday in Golden gate Park, with the Women winning and the men all running together. The great news was the return of Thomas Radcliffe who missed all last season.

Decades ago and off of no training above 200 feet, I ran a half marathon in Bend. Felt like I'd gained 25 pounds.
Any experts here believe altitude training effect can have a effective benefit that lasts longer than six weeks?
I'm skeptical but persuadable.

From a friend
the bottom line is that the team will get very little if any benefit from Bend's altitude. Rather, as Milt alluded, they are there for the wide-open mountain trail running to get in their "volume" runs which they couldn't do as well in San Diego due to congestion . . .
