Clark Shaughnessy, Frankie Albert, and the T formation -

This is an enjoyable article about Clark Shaughnessy, Frankie Albert, and Stanford's undefeated 1940 team, which transformed college football by introducing the T formation.
Orginally published in Sports Illustrated in 1977.

From the article:
The "press looked upon Shaughnessy's hiring as an occasion not so much for dirges as high hilarity."
Hmm. Should we pause in our taunting of Herm Edwards hiring at ASU?
No. I don't think of Herm as a creative genius in waiting.

SI Vault is a very good source. Look very closely in the May 24, 1964 issue and you might find a member of this board.

It's funny, Stanford fans at the time didn't want to hire Shaughnessey. The two favorites were SJSU coach Dudley DeGroot of San Jose State (who holds the NFL's Washington club's winning percentage record) and Santa Clara's Buck Shaw (coming off of consecutive Sugar Bowl wins, ultimately becoming the 49ers' coach). In fact, some thought the hire of Shaughnessey was a prelude to eliminate football at Stanford.
Supposedly Walter Camp used the T-Formation in 1892, prior to the advent of the forward pass, but abandoned it for the single wing and other formations when the forward pass became legal. Early coaches thought the T formation was a "gadget" offense, though a guy named Halas had Shaughnessey on his staff in the early 1930s. Halas became a proponent and taught it to Sid Luckman, as did Frank Leahy (4 NCAA championships at ND in the 1940s) and Bud Wilkinson at Oklahoma. The Bears ended up trouncing Washington 73-0 in the NFL championship.

One is me - but not particularly recognizable. (My dad was able to recognize me when flipping through the magazine on a plane. But you'd expect my dad to know what I look like.)
And GaryT is GaryT.
