Nice little piece on Bryce from SI, focusing on his pass protection: https://www.si.com/nfl/2018/09/12/bryce-love-stanford-2019-nfl-draft-stock-scouting-report-first-round-will-grier-dwayne-haskins-riley

I've noticed that his pass-pro has indeed improved but I fear his draft stock will fall as he does not appear to have the same agility and explosiveness as last year.  I actually went back and watched his 2017 highlights and subsequently watched all of his runs this past weekend against USC and I think there is a noticeable difference in his abilty to cut and make the initial defender miss.

Chris Johnson was sub 200 pounds essentially his entire NFL career and was listed at 191 pounds during his 2009 season when he ran for over 2,000 yards.

Bryce seemed to still have great "straight-line" speed on the 59 yard run but not the same agility and initial burst. I think he is more effective and more of a difference maker at his 2017 weight.

I have wondered if that might be true, but haven't gone back to watch enough tape to make my own determination.

Be careful of comparing a 2017 highlight reel to an entire game of 2018. By definition, the highlight reel includes only the best plays, in this case over the course of a season.

One thing that I have noticed about Love this year, that may also have been true last year (don't have a clear memory), is that he often makes decisions where he eschews the cut that would clearly make a few yards in favor of a move that might break a big play but might also lead to being stopped for a loss or little gain.
Though I still think the OL is the bigger factor in the feast/famine nature of Love's runs.

I also wondered, even before the season began, about the news that Love had put on some weight.

I was reminded of Darrin Nelson who sat out a year after his sophomore season rehabbing an injury and came back considerably stronger and more muscular than when he left.  It was an obvious effort to get himself ready for the NFL, since his lighter "scatback" style of running was apparently not going to transfer well to the pros.  But I thought he was less effective when he came back--many fewer of those amazing change-of-direction plays, although he could pound it up the middle a little better than before.  His average, however, went down, and a lot of fans thought he was never quite the same as his first two seasons.

Good point in terms of comparing 2017 highlights but I was really focusing more on his shiftiness/agility and burst/explosiveness as opposed to the result of the plays.

Take a look at his 75 yard TD run in the 2017 game at USC, his runs against Arizona St in 2017 as well as his runs against San Diego State in 2017 and then watch his carries in last week's games against USC.  There is a clear difference in explosiveness.

I think sometimes RBs make the mistake of trying to emulate other RBs as I am sure Bryce noticed how Saquon Barkley and Jonathan Taylor  [when he met them on the Awards Circuit last season] were thicker, more muscular RBs.  I've actually followed Bryce since he was an 11-12 year old track star as I lived in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area and my step-kids ran at the same track meets as Bryce.

In my opinion, Bryce's "gift" is his explosiveness and his body-type is more of a sprinter-type (ectomorph-mesomorph hybrid......while many elite RBs are more mesomorph or mesomorph-endomorph hybrid) and thus weight-gain impacts him more than perhaps other RBs.   In my opinion, he should model his game more along the lines of Chris Johnson and Jamaal Charles [as both played in the NFL at a high level at under 200 pounds and depended on their speed for success] in trying to be the best explosive RB as opposed to gaining weight and now lacking that explosiveness.

Good plan.  They had a ton of success.
