Women's Soccer: #1 Stanford vs. #7 SCU -
Mick - 09-15-2018
At 4:00 p.m. tomorrow, Stanford plays SCU in women's soccer. I anticipate about a 3-0 win in favor of a truly special Stanford team. SCU may be able to hang for a while, but Stanford has too many weapons. Stanford is 7-0, and five of the seven wins have been by two goals or more. SCU is coming off of a 3-0 win over a 6-1-1 Texas Christian team.
Stanford's defense has been ferocious, giving up just four goals, while scoring 22 goals. SCU is 7-1, has a 16-8 goal differential. The series between the two teams has been fairly even. Stanford holds a 22-20-7 edge, while the last eight matches have been 4-4. Fifth year senior #9 Maria Sanchez leads the WCC with six assists. #7 Maddy Gonzalez leads the team with four goals. Goalie Melissa Lowder has a 0.94 GAA.
Both teams wear similar colors, but you'll be able to tell the Stanford players, they'll be the tall ones...:D.
The game is on the Pac 12 network.

Hope so.
Of our five (!) Herman Trophy watch list players, Stanford will be missing USWNT starter, CB Tierna Davidson. (On crutches with a boot on Friday). And senior great player Michelle Xiao (limping badly with knee wrap on Friday). And Jaye Boissiere, though back the last couple of games after an undisclosed injury, doesn't look at full speed. And
soph sensation Catarina Macario has played about half the minutes in the last couple of matches after another undisclosed injury.
Oh, and Santa Clara not only is 7-1 and highly rnaked but beat then #2 UNC last Friday, before we had to go to OT to beat them 2-1. No OT for Santa Clara!
I THINK we'll win, but I also think this will be one of our toughest four matches before the NCAAs - UNC, Santa Clara, UCLA, and SC. (All, as it turns out, at home!)
Did I mention that Santa Clar will have a lot of fans there. And that this is a big, big match for them, every year? Tough match coming. Looking forward to watching it!

3-0 would be a wipe-out: I'm all for it, but I think it's extremely unlikely. Santa Clara's strategy against us has usually been to focus on defense, prodding us to take long outside shots (most of which are not on frame and the GK handles the rest), and hoping to score one goal or get a tie. Not a bad strategy for an underdog; it worked 2 years ago. I foresee a low-scoring game but would be delighted to be proved wrong, for if a lot of goals are scored we are going to be the ones scoring them.

Might be a rough-ish game. Stanford only has one yellow card and zero red cards this season. SCU has 11 yellow cards and one red card. Seems strange to me, most of SCU's better players are 5'6" or shorter. Only two of the ten non-goalie players are over 5'6".
SCU has slightly more corner kicks than Stanford (44-37), but close to the same average per game. Shots on goal average is very close, both teams hovering around 40%.
