Some great Haley Jones quotes -
bl82 - 09-26-2018
I'm tired of sitting on pins and needles with the recruitment of Haley Jones, but I do like a couple of these quotes:
Five-star basketball recruit Haley Jones of Santa Cruz is ranked the No. 1 player in the nation, according to the 2019 ESPN HoopGurlz rankings.
The 6-foot-1 senior wing for Archbishop Mitty High in San Jose had no idea of her ranking until a friend texted congratulations.
“I was confused to what that reference was, so I looked online and saw I was number one,” Jones said Monday. “I don’t know, it was just a rush of joy and then I went on to my normal school day. I forgot to tell my parents before I left the house, so I had to call them and let them know on the way to school."
“...Every recognition is a great honor, but I try not to pay too much attention to that,” Jones said.

The article mentions she can play 1 thru 5. I wonder what Stanford is telling her about a potential role.

Bobk's recruiting thread says that we can take 4 in 2019 and we have 2 commits so far. So it seems Jones and Warnock must be the two offers currently out and not committed.

Don't we already have Belibi, Prechtel and Jump? If so, we only have one slot? Is it first come, first serve?

We do have those three, so there is only one slot left. I doubt very much if it is first come, first serve...much more likely that some information has been shared privately with the coaches. That could mean that Warnock was tired of waiting as a possible backup recruit and will announce that she is going elsewhere, or if she says it is Stanford tomorrow then I presume that Haley told the coaches privately that she wasn't coming and so they offered Warnock. Given that Haley is visiting Stanford this weekend it is also possible that Haley just told us that she is coming and so the coaches let Warnock know so she can move on with her decision.
So until Warnock makes her announcement tomorrow we won't really know what it means. Anything is still possible at this point. I'd be shocked if she announced tomorrow that she is taking the last spot while Haley is here on her official visit. It would not make sense.
Warnock is from the same school as Estella Moschkau.

Here is an interesting question for those of you who know more about recruiting than I do:
Does a recruit have to have an official offer to come on an official visit? In other words, could a recruit come on an official visit to a school that is not yet prepared to extend an offer?
RE: Some great Haley Jones quotes -

Offers are informal; there are no rules about them. So there's no such rule, as there's no such thing as an "official offer".
An "official visit" is paid for by the school, so of course making one means the school invited.

Yes, I looked at the wrong recruiting thread and forgot about Prechtel. We must be holding a slot for Jones. Dunno what's up with Warnock.

Always nice to have Stanford on your list and say I choose team abc over Stanford
I’ll have to find out at some point as to the offical but Jones is very in play still

I’ve seen one too many elite recruits come down to a battle between Stanford and ABC and say they chose AbC over Stanford. Feels a bit like Charlie Brown and the football.
Or maybe I’m ornery over the football game.

Unless I missed my mark, Haley was on her official to Notre Dame last weekend and on her official to Stanford this weekend. She probably got to see both of our football beat-downs :(
Fortunately, she is a local and so she knows the Stanford reputation for athletic excellence across many sports and many years.

Well, the good news for us is that UConn isn't exactly lighting up the football world these days. And I think for a top, top recruit like Jones, "tailgate culture" won't factor into it as much as it might for some other athletes. Given her shortlist, I imagine it's a question of program fit, coaching fit, professional athlete aspirations, and academic aspirations. We know who wins the last one, without question, and UConn pretty clearly is the top fit for professional athlete aspirations. So the remaining question is just how the first two will play out. And I guess we'll just have to wait, cross our fingers, and see. In the meantime, it'll be interesting to see where Warnock announces...

Bob, no matter what you will always beat me to this news. I was Googling her name and refreshing every few minutes and you still beat me :)
Good luck to McKenna!

I think I agree with your analysis with one possible quibble. I don't think I agree that UConn is a better fit for professional athlete aspirations. I think any WBB player who is good enough to become a professional athlete will fare just as well under Tara as under Geno--we have had a lot of such athletes, after all. It may be true that Geno has more of them at a higher level--but that is simply because his team has been dominant and recruited more of them. Jennifer or Kate or Nneka or Chiney or Jayne or Kayla or Candice or Jeanette etc. would not have gone farther and further in the pros had they played for Geno.
Kate Starbird is, I think, the perfect example of how a Stanford WBB scholarship is so much more valuable than a UConn scholarship. Not only did Kate get to play professional basketball, when that was over (as it inevitably will be) she was prepared to go earn a PhD and become a university professor. Similarly, I see Chiney going into politics. We are the "cake and eat it too" school.
