Mobile QB’s - Phogge - 09-29-2018

Watched a bit of Clemson/Syracuse, Utah/Wazzu, PennState/OSU when Stanford folded in the fourth Q and am watching Kal and UO. In each game dual threat QB’s made chicken salad out of CS. Costello is not a runner and for some reason can’t escape a rush. McSorley in particular has home run ability AND is a big time thrower.

Hogan was able to keep some drives alive with his feet. Stndord no longer has that asset.

BTW, the Herbert we saw last week continues to be the real deal at Berkeley.

RE: Mobile QB’s - washingtonismoney - 09-29-2018

Bit puzzling. Costello looked much more springy last year than this year.

Something is odd about Costello's running choices. The first two plays of the game appeared to be read-options to the naked eye, but either Costello was instructed (or he chose) to hand the ball off despite the d-end crashing to Love. It seemed like Costello had open space to run to on those plays, and certainly he's shown in the past he can make threatening runs. Dunno what's happening there.

But if you can't scramble for positive yardage you can at least move in the pocket to buy time, or have a quick passing game. Costello's shown those gifts at times before. They weren't really in evidence tonight. I don't think this game was his fault, but then again I'd also say it wasn't *not* his fault.

RE: Mobile QB’s - cardcrimson - 09-29-2018

Heard on the Stanford pre-game that with Mills out, Costello was expected to not risk running. Instead, the expected him to stay safe in the pocket. Seems like ND listened to our pregame.

lex24 - lex24 - 09-29-2018

You can’t play that way. In fact in many ways I think that makes it more likely not less likely to get hurt. You can run and slide at least get out of trouble sometimes. He got the crap beat out of him tonight. It’s been a while since I’ve seen that happen at that level to a Stanford quarterback

I wonder how much he is still feeling the effects of his injury.  He was mobile “enough” last year.

Is Mills now officially out again, having reinjured his knee being in for, what, 1-2 series against UC Davis?
Hate to say it, and I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think he is going to be able to stay healthy long enough to be a significant contributor to Stanford football.
Too bad, since he was such a great prospect coming out of high school.

What is the Mills injury, exactly?  He could sit out this season and return healthy in Spring, depending on what the deal is.

Mills has already redshirted, so he cannot sit out.  NCAA regulations require a player to use his four years of eligibility in five years.  This is his redshirt freshman season, and he cannot have it back even if he does not play.

As far as I know it is the same knee he hurt before his senior year in high school and has now reinjured three times. I don't think it has ever been officially disclosed just what the problem is; I assume it's an ACL.

I wasn't implying he could redshirt.  Sitting out means not playing too.

OK.  I just wanted to stress that, whether he sits or suits up, the result is the same in terms of eligibility.  Frankly, if he really cannot play this year, it would be great to secure the extra year of eligibility so that he would have more time after Costello leaves.  But that doesn't fly.

Not to belabor this, but....
Mills has done a lot of sitting out in the last two years, and it doesn't seem to help much.

RE: Mobile QB’s - BobK - 09-30-2018

It is a knee with Mills it is not an acl
That said very troublesome that he can’t stay healthy

I sure hope we offer QB Zack Larrier at Monterey Trail. He’s been at Stanford a number of times. Zach is a dual treat QB with great speed. Sub 47 qtr runner so I want him for track but football is a full scholarship so it’ll be football for him

Well, the last real "treat" I remember at QB was Hogan. Didn't say he was a "great" QB, he was a winner and competitor. Its arguable that he had a better supporting cast around him,  but the record and the individual game wins support. And, before ya'll gang up, yes, I think its arguable that he played with better OL than we have at present.  If Larrier is that  kind of treat, get 'em.

Ummm, sorry.  Just have to face ND fans this coming week.

RE: Mobile QB’s - SF_Cardinal_Fan - 09-30-2018

Are any or all of Stanford's depth chart  3rd , 4th, and 5th QB's ( West, Plautz, or Richardson ) known for being especially mobile ?

RE: Mobile QB’s - BostonCard - 09-30-2018

Actually, if Mills’ two years were lost due to injury, he could petition for a sixth year.

Really?  Didn't know that.  I wonder how Shaw classified his redshirt season (injury or standard).  He was injured last year.

RE: Mobile QB’s - BobK - 09-30-2018

Mills suited up for some games last season. Plus if healthy to play and performs he isn't staying for a 5th year.

Not sure what especially mobile means to you but no is a safe answer.

I saw West play in a high school game on TV his senior year. He did not strike me as particularly mobile.

we liked a top 300/top dual threat QB John Rhys Plumlee, but no offer as he didn't camp with us.  nice speed and also hit .455 last season.  he is going to try and play both football and baseball at UGA.  [Stanford has made no QB offers in the '19 class]
