W Soccer 3-0 over OSU - oldalum - 10-08-2018

I didn't watch the game, but the videos of two terrific goals are on the Stanford website and are worth seeing: Tegan McGrady bending in a free kick from the side of the box into the far upper corner, and Macario bending a free kick away from the GK and onto the head of a diving Dibiasi. The skill level of all 3 players is off the charts.

Stanford-OSU recap

I did not see the match either. But there are some eye-popping numbers in the box score. Stanford took 15(!) shots on goal (36 shots in all) with 12 saves by the OSU keeper. And OSU committed 14 fouls. I guess the number of free kicks (and one missed penalty kick) were a result of Oregon State's overly aggressive play. Hope that Stanford came out of the game with no injuries.

I watched part of the game on a Sunday night rebroadcast on the Pac 12 channel. However, it was too late for me and I fell asleep mid-match so missed a lot - perhaps a majority.

OSU committed tons of fouls.  That looked to me more a function of being always behind and out of position and rather than a conscious effort to be "aggressive".  According to those commenting on the broadcast, OSU leads the conference in fouls. Given their struggles this season, I wouldn't be surprised that the always a step behind thing has been a constant.

I watched most of it, but Oregon State didn't make much of an attempt to get back in the game once they fell behind 3-0, and it got pretty choppy.

The DiBiasi header was indeed wonderful, as was McGrady's free kick.  They were from almost the same spot, on the right side of the penalty box.  And in both instances, Tegan and Catarina were over the ball as alternatives.  McGrady first curled her left-footed strike over the keeper to the far post, then Macario curled her right-footed cross wickedly across the face of goal and then DiBiasi laid out in a full on forward dive to hammer it home.

In between, Belle Breide toe-poked a loose ball in the box just over the goalline out of a scrum of people, including the keeper, on the ground.

Other than that, Stanford went substitution happy - after the third goal, I don't think the starters were on the field together.

And it was already a substitute-heavy lineup.  Beyond the injured and resting, I don't think Madison played at all; I wonder if she took too many knocks in the Oregon game, and/or the prospect of playing against a physical Beaver side led to a cautious approach.  Sophia Serafin and Ceci Gee got in for good runs in the second half, with Gee showing some bite to her game.  Malatsky brought some good energy and work rate; I think she may be pushing her way up the depth chart a little bit.

Other results last weekend pointed out the difficulties of road life.  The previously undefeated and untied Cougars lost two in Colorado and Utah. Other than Stanford, the only road win was Cal over Oregon 2-1, and you have to think the Ducks were deflated a bit after the OT loss on Thursday.  Big game this week is $C in Pullman on Saturday night.
