Stanford in the NFL 10/14 - BostonCard - 10-14-2018

Hooper with a nice touchdown catch... the sort of thing that I think many people here are clamoring for more (short pass where Hooper then beat his coverage one on one after the catch)

Sweet.  Notice the excellent play action fake?

RE: Stanford in the NFL 10/14 - BostonCard - 10-14-2018

Brennan Scarlett has a fumble recovery against Buffalo; Justin Reid has a pair of tackles.

Luck is facing Sam Darnold and the Jets.  Indianapolis is losing 33-20.  Luck's line is hurt by his two interceptions:

12/22 (55%) 178 yards  (8.1 ypa) 2 TD 2 INT

Quiet day for Christian McCaffrey so far; 8 carries for 20 yards; 3 catches for 24.

Notice the excellent blocking?  The play fake didn't do much; Tampa was blitzing anyways and rushed five; the blitzing outside linebacker did not freeze at the fake hand-off; he was just well blocked.  The key was the stacked receiver set.  (also helped that the offensive line was able to keep the pocket clean).  One of the receivers goes deep, taking both the cornerback and safety with him and letting Hooper establish himself underneath. Even then, the play should have gone for four yards had the safety covering Hooper been able to make the tackle.  Nice play by Hooper that got him the touchdown; bad tackling by the DB.  Also, nice recognition by Ryan to throw it to the spot vacated by the blitzing linebacker.

Now the reason I liked the play is that it was an easy way to gain four to five yards (I assume had the linebacker not been blitzing that Hooper could have run a route outside), and had the upshot of a touchdown if Hooper could beat the safety one on one, which he did.  You will take plays like that: high probability of gaining a moderate amount of yardage with an upshot of a tocuchdown and relatively little downside barring a bad throw or a blown blocking assignment.  Less than four seconds elapsed from when the ball was snapped to when Matt Ryan released it, so even with a blitz coming the line just had to be good enough.  But the same play could have been run out of the shotgun and would have been equally effective.

An all-Stanford strip-sack (by Trent Murphy) and fumble recovery (by Harrison Phillips) gives the Bills the ball back.

Doug Baldwin had six catches for 91 yards.

Luck's line is hurt by his surrounding cast.  A who's who of WRs, his receivers are not. =(
Given that, very impressive that he was an onside kick recovery away from having the chance to tie the game.

I was going to say something about Baker Mayfield with 5 sacks and 2 INT and how Bryce was robbed but I won’t. ;)

RE: Stanford in the NFL 10/14 - Phogge - 10-15-2018

Bryce wasn’t robbed. Mayfield was dynamic on a better team. He made them better. But it was close. Andrew wasn’t robbed in Newton’s year except by the Auburn/Daddy Newton recruiting nightmare.

However Toby, McCaffrey and Andrew in Griffin’s year were robbed.

Agree on all counts. Without Mayfield, Oklahoma's defense loses them at least 4 games. They fired their DC as soon as Texas ran train on em.

Hey, they're our guys... Of course they were robbed!  J/K I think that is a fair objective assessment.  From most to least deserving (in their year):

McCaffrey (2015)
Gerhart (2009)
Luck (2011)
Love (2017)
Luck (2010 - his better year, but can't really begrudge the year Newton had)

Mayfield's the one I have the least problem with if for no other reason it was an entirely different position than Love, so there's also the toughness of the apples to oranges comparisons.  Every other time, our guy got beat by someone of the same position when ours had a clear claim to be better; maybe you could argue 2010, but I'd point to the whole character aspect of the award too.

My comment was made with tongue firmly in cheek (thus the attempted wink). I just wanted to note that Baker didn’t have a very good day.   :)

RE: Stanford in the NFL 10/14 - BostonCard - 10-15-2018

Tough game for Sherman who got called for a defensive hold on third down on the Green Bay game winning drive.  It would have been a sack and green by would have punted otherwise.

Thomas, Martinez, and Montgomery also had their names called on the broadcast, mostly for positive things (that was my impression anyway but I wasn’t watching full time).

RE: Stanford in the NFL 10/14 - Phogge - 10-16-2018

Montgomery got to the edge when GB was probably going to run out the clock. Changed everything. Martinez made a few plays that got little comment. He just quietly makes more tackles than anybody in the NFL. Thomas made one nice play. Continues to disappoint overall. Garnett still injured and needs a change of surroundings.

I saw that game in London.  Seahawks fans were out in force for Seattle's demolition of the Raiders.  Unbelievable how popular the Seattle franchise is in Europe.  We ran into 12s all over the city from all corners of the continent.  Many of them were sporting Sherman jerseys even though he is now a Niner.

Yeah, Montgomery had a quiet day until then.  It looked like Green Bay was happy to run the clock out (SF had no time outs left), but on the first play, Montgomery picked up 15 or so yards and got out of bounds.  Then
