Toohill and Love will be back, and the OL looks better.

Great news!! Toohill's been out, what -- 4 weeks now? Must not have been a broken arm, as some feared. He's definitely been missed.
I'm glad we'll have both #20's ready. I sure hope Bryce is healed and that it's not one of those nagging injuries.

How's the safety position looking as far as players recovering from injuries...

Press conference is today but I believe Edwards still out.

Ergo, safety remains a problem.

I have been frustrated by our nickel back for the whole season, but I haven't been following the performance by the safeties as closely. Have they been playing that poorly?

I think Jordan Fox has played well in Toohill's absence.

He's faster than Toohill but has gotten burned at least twice that I can remember, overcommitting and losing contain on critical plays. Once was against Oregon and allowed Herbert to get away for a crucial first down.

Not saying Fox has played perfectly, but he is statistically tied as the team leader in tackles-for-loss with 5.5 on the year. He's also credited with a forced fumble. Fox is pretty much a lock to start next year, I would think.

I think Fox and Reid are probably our two best pass rushers. Alfieri has been very effective on a delayed rush when he loops behind the DE and comes up the middle. But both Fox and Reid have a lot of quickness off the LOS. I think they will be starters next year.

I like the state of the OLB pipeline. Toohill, Fox, Reid, and Robinson next year - even though Joey's gone, that's still a very solid 2-deep with only Toohill exhausting eligibility afterwards. Add in some good youngins/recruits (2/3 RS freshmen depending on whether Tobe Umerah converts to DE, and Stephen Herron+hopefully Aeneas DiCosmo coming in as frosh) and this is probably the position I'm least worried about on D.

It's been awhile since everyone's been healthy, so just to confirm, that OL is the desired starting 5, right? (To the extent there's any sort of consensus?) Who else there is still out? Sarrell? But he was always a backup, right?

Yes, I believe safety is a problem. Open field tackling especially. Coverage also but aggravated by lack of pass rush in last two games. Expecting it to be better Thursday. just have a feeling.

Our present starters constitute our intended opening-game lineup (Jesse Burkett was injured)
except for Ben Edwards, who is presently out, replaced by Malik Antoine.

Impossible to tell, but my guess is that yes, that is probably the starting five that the staff envisioned (although LG was always going to be a battle between Fanaika and Hamilton, especially since the former seems to be better run blocking, while the latter is probably better at pass blocking). Sarrell started the season as a back-up, but the more optimistic amongst us might have hoped he'd emerge at RT to overtake Hall by the end of the year.

I don't think Fox is faster than Toohill. A couple of weeks ago Shaw said that Toohill runs a 4.5 40. I know that he was electronically timed at 4.62 a couple of years ago. He can really run.

Not so good news. Love and Herbig both questionable according to Shaw press conference. I assume Dalman would take Herbig's place if Nate can't go.

Details give me even less confidence that either will play.

I'd rather Love sit than attempt to play at less than 90-95 percent. We all remember how he gutted it out last year, so his heart is unquestioned. I just take no joy in seeing him limp around, even if he somehow retains enough burst to get beyond the line of scrimmage (which this year seems a battle unto itself, anyway).

I’m completely with you on that. At the same time, I’m bummed because Thursday will be my first regular season road game, as I happen to be traveling to Tempe for work. Sadly, no Love.
By the way, back to the top of this thread, RJ Abeythia ought to know better than to place any credence in our depth chart. It’s frequently behind-the-times and often intentionally deceptive. The greater the importance of a player, the more likely the depth chart is to be misleading or wrong about him.
Shaw’s pressers are a little more revealing, assuming you apply the code of “day-to-day” and “questionable” = “doubtful”.
My guess is that we’ll be missing our two best players on offense. On the bright side, I can score tix at midfield on the visitor’s side at ASU for almost nothing. Even better, I’m told they serve beer in Sun Devil Stadium, so no matter what happens, I’ll be slightly less on edge.
