Does Stanford play a football game tonight? - OutsiderFan - 10-18-2018

Reading this board, you'd never imagine Stanford has a game tonight.  Looks like a mid-Summer first page on the Cardboard.

Anyone have any thoughts on ASU? Any things to be concerned about? Anything you think Stanford can exploit or must make special effort to stop?

Hey OF, it’s a work day. I will watch but under severe protest to Larry Scott. Conflicts with baseball which is really meant to be played in daytime. And only in the first week of October.

Croatian curse on MLB and the PAC 12.

ASU's DC Danny Gonzales is from San Diego State, where he helped the Aztecs beat us in 2017.  That being said, ASU's defence is relatively youthful and may not have seen an attack quite like Stanford is capable of playing (please, please DS and TP, don't run it up the middle for half of the game and then realize its not going to work).  There may be some opportunities, as there usually are, for our oversized WRs and TEs to be mismatches against ASU's corners, who are 6' and 5' 10".

So true. In Silicon Valley terms, after two losses, this board’s DAUs (that’s “daily average unique” visitors) must go into the tank.

For me, tonight is a BIG game because I will be there in person. I happened to have work in Tempe to today/tomorrow and the timing was perfect.  I’m taking off from SFO right now and there were two separate individuals in Stanford gear on my way to my seat.  So a few people still care.

ASU is dangerous. People focus on their great receiver, but I’m actually most concerned that we won’t be able to stop the run. Ironically, Casey Tucker may have a part in creating that problem for us.

Last year’s game was interesting - Bryce ran for 300+ yards, but as I vaguely recall, they ran up the middle very easily on us.

Replace "300+" with "a lot of" and this describes almost every game last season.

ASU coaches and players comment on Stanford - https://247sports.com/college/arizona-state/Article/In-their-words-ASU-coaches-players-preview-Stanford-123455234/

Keep your eye especially on #24 Chase Lucas who is a DB but comes forward aggressively on run support. He was a frosh AA last year and 2nd team all Pac 12.

And all of their LBs appear to be very active. They all have 4 or more TFLs on the season, most of which appear to be run stops rather than sacks. As a team, ASU averages 7.7 TFLs per game. ASU's defense will be a big challenge to Stanford's OL.

Here’s what The Daily says. Nothing earth shattering but just for something to read until game time.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I definitely get a bit disengaged when the team is losing ugly. It's partly that it's just less fun when you're getting creamed, which I think everyone understands, but I've been getting weary of college football for a while now. Not Stanford, I still love the team and going to games, etc, but I don't think I've watched a full game this year outside of Stanford. On Saturdays I'd rather do yardwork or something. I think the sport as currently organized has too many issues, too little parity, it's just not interesting. Besides all that it's right in the middle of the League Championships and the NFL season is in full swing, so for me my attention is just elsewhere.

What's there to say about ASU if you haven't watched them and won't besides tonight? I don't know any more about them than anyone else. I'm still hoping we win and turn things around and become more fun to watch than the last couple games, but if we don't? You know, shit happens. You can't win 10 games every year, especially at an institution that won't cheat.

Also worth noting that tonight is a sports equinox:

All four professional sports leagues have a game tonight.  Plus college football.

Yes, I know there’s a game tonight.   I arrived at Skyharbor International today at 11:30 AM and will be in the stands cheering for my alma mater.  Excluding bowl games and Big Games, this is my first road trip in a long time.

What can / will our OLine do tonight? I think we need to throw right out of the gate with Love sidelined. Shaw will try to run, cuz "that's who we are" (in his mind). And, yet we are 11th in the Pac12 now in Rushing with 85yds a game. And just 10th in points scored at 26 a game.

AZST only has four guys to stop:  QB Wilkens, RB Benjamin; All-Am WR N.Harry, and WR Darby.
That is their offense.
We have more weapons.  KJ gotta spread it around, and he needs time to do that.

I wish folks would quit saying this; as of now Shaw has basically quit trying to run the ball - to the detriment of the pass game.
We're 11th in the conference in rushing attempts. The last time that happened is ... never.

Hey BigEasy,

I had planned to do a post all along.  It's on a new thread.  Thanks for asking!

RE: Does Stanford play a football game tonight? - BigEasyCard - 10-19-2018

Thanks Embo.  That was a great post.  I especially liked the part about having the home fans go silent.

I heartily endorse the commitment to attend away games.  In addition to the experience of seeing another city and school, it's a great chance to support the team and meet like-minded Cardinal fans.

Over the years I have enjoyed trips to Wake Forest, Duke, Army, Notre Dame, Northwestern, and Oregon.  Each trip has special memories.

I have already circled 9/18/21 against Vanderbilt in Nashville.  I hope to see you there!

Geaux Cardinal!
