Women's Soccer lays at TD & shutout on undefeated Colorado -
muiron - 10-21-2018
(Repeat of a post on the Sears Board).
Crushing match for the 13-0-3, 5-0-2 Buffs. We scored early and often:
1:40 Kuhlman off a corner kick laid in by Greubel
8:03 DiBiasi on a PK (drawn by Kuhlman)
29:53 Macario from Haley (exactly 90 sec after the two entered the game, wh/they didn't start)
34:30 Pickett from Haley (Kiki's 1st goal of the year and 2nd of her career - the crowd went wild
42;24 Boissiere on a hard strike that took a wicked deflection, assist Marcario
52:45 Greubel from DiBiari (very pretty pass and finish)
70:20 Macario unassisted
Colorado did have 8 shots and forced 3 saves, including one or two tough ones for Jahansouz.
Colorado, in spite of being undefeated and 5-0-2 in the Pac 12, was only ranked #15 for a reason: a very weak preseason schedule and a Pac 12 schedule where they have yet to play USC, UCLA, or Utah. Could easily end up 5-4-2 - it's tough to play when you are down two in the first 8 minutes but they didn't look very sharp defensively. OTOH, their remaining matches are all at home, at altitude, so they may do better.
Our team, OTOH, looked great and the goals just built on each other. We went early for the senior's ceremony for the first time in several years. It was emotional - we're losing at least 4 great players: Tegan McGrady, Michelle Xiao, Jordan DiBiasi, and Alana Cook (plus less used Averie Collies). Those four have probably started more than 80% of the matches in their four years - Alana has played in every game of her career at Stanford. The 2015 stats don't tell me how many starts but she has started every game in soph, jr, and senior year. I think starting GK Alison Jahansouz is also gone, though she did the ceremony last year with her (non-redshirt) class. And Jaye Boissiere, plagued with injuries, is in her fifth year in the program with one more year of eligibility but a 6th undergrad year may feel a little much. We will lose 5 starters from this team and could lose a sixth. But that's next year's worry - back to this match.
Poor Colorado - their first experience with a really high quality team came on senior day with a packed stadium and lots of motivated players. (To be fair, they did beat WSU when it was ranked #7, a while ago.)
We looked awfully good. We have 4 road matches in a row to end the Pac 12 season, against the #s 7, 8, 9, and 10 teams in the league - ASU, WSU, UW, and Cal. We're tied on 14 points with USC but we have a game in hand (the to be made up ASU match); we're 2 points ahead of UCLA and Colorado and 4 ahead of Utah. Play with motivation and we should be the undefeated, untied in conference champs.
I am worried about the toll of injuries for the NCAAs, though. Tierna Davidson is unlikely to be back with her broken ankle; Sophia Smith, in a cast and wheelchair today, is gone for the year - I here a broken leg. We're deep but those are two superstars - USWNT starter at 19 and USWNT <20 star. (Of course, we have other superstars - Catarina, take a bow - and stars - all the starters and many of the subs. But I'd feel better about a return to the College Cup if Tierna and Sophia hadn't had bones broken in the course of play (at home, in both cases).
BTW only 5 players have been in every match this year: Alana Cook, Jordan DiBiasi, Tegan McGrady (three graduating seniors), and two somewhat surprises, super subs Beattie Goad and true frosh Abbey Greubel.
Good match today and a lot of relaxing fun to watch!
Go Card!

Great summary as usual. A real shame about Smith. Such an outstanding player.
