Maybe there is something to the idea that Helton is only as good as his ability to start Sam Darnold. Or maybe freshmen QB’s struggle. Or maybe there is more to the story.

I suspect it is more "If you want to keep your job, at least appear to do something."

probably in Stanford's interests for Helton to stay along with Drevno

RE: Meanwhile at SC - Phogge - 10-30-2018

In Stanford news the department talking to Shaw re a three year extension. Can’t reveal the source.

RE: Meanwhile at SC - Gary86 - 10-30-2018

This is the typical scapegoating that happens when a head coach starts feeling his seat getting hot.

yesterday U alums are not happy.  only 47K showed up at the Mausoleum this weekend (which would be close to SRO at our place).  hopefully if Helton goes, they'll hire from within again.

I agree, though Helton is clearly not as bad as the prior embarrassments they had coaching.  But Helton strikes me as a Mora clone... good enough not to get fired but bad enough not to be successful over the long term.  The difference is that USC is not as patient as UCLA.  But I would rather SC stick with mediocre.

But man, how quickly do perceptions change.  This could have been Stanford post-Luck.

if I'm Clay Helton now I'm really worried about my job.....

“I believe in Clay Helton,” Swann said. “I like the position he takes. Clay is passionate about what he does, and Clay is honest and real about what he wants to accomplish and how he wants to accomplish it. There’s no false chatter in Clay Helton. He is concerned about the welfare of his student-athletes, his football players, his coaches. He wants them to grow up in the program and win the right way. I stand solidly behind Clay to move those things forward.”
