RIP. Willie died today. One of my hero’s. I wasn’t there for his first Gabe but was when he returned in the 70s
Sad day

McCovey was one of 20 major leaguers to play in 4 different decades. Counting only those who played in the 50s and more recently name them

Indeed.
I saw him play on May 28, 1978--my very first professional sports game I ever attended, with the Dodgers against the Giants at Candlestick. I wasn't knowledgeable about baseball, but when I heard his name I recognized it and was surprised that he was still playing. I remember thinking "someday I will be able to say I saw Willie McCovey play." Well, old 81 to young 81: today is that day.
Sadly, he had a mediocre day, with no hits. The Giants called up a new pinch hitter, Mike Ivie, who proceeded to hit a grand slam to beat the Dodgers, and that overshadowed everything else. My seat was so bad that I couldn't see where the balls landed--every fly ball looked like it might be a home run when it disappeared out of my line of sight. But the crowd told me what I needed to know.

I was listening on the radio that day he broke in, batting cleanup and going 4 for 4 with two triples and two singles off Robin Roberts in Philly. The beginning of a legend.

Sad day. Stretch was always so beloved. At Candlestick and PacBell, Mays was always the last introduced on important occasions, but the love for McCovey ran just a little deeper. McCovey was ours and the love seemed to be mutual. McCovey was always completely genuine and will truly be missed by Giants fans. Glad I got to see him give out the Willie Mac Award this year. The letter from Larry Baer to fans says that condolences can be sent to Forever44@sfgiants.com. Forever 44 indeed.

Sad.
I never met him, but I saw him play golf many Sundays in the mid 80's at Half Moon Bay, with DimMaggio and the local pro (Moon Mullins). The three were royalty there and then.
If there is a heaven he will meet those other 2 soon and take Chuck Schultz along to make up a 4-ball......;

I was in a dental chair with the radio on as he hit one of the triples off Roberts. In those days everyone listened to the Giants. Many people in downtown San Francisco had small transistors held against their ear.
During my time with the Giants Mac was gracious and self effacing. He went through a hard time during the ‘60 season and was sent down for awhile. Did his work and came back a more complete player. He owned Drysdale.

Franco?
Early Wynn.
Bobo Newsom. Also most teams.
Kaat.
Nolan Ryan.
Fisk.
Eddie Collins played forever but don't know if he was player/manager at the end.
Probably some pre 1900. Dan Brouters? Montgomery Ward? Kid Gleason?

Not doing pre 1950.
No on Wilhelm he started 1952.
Minoso 5 decades but he pitch hit as a coach in 1980, 1949 his first season.
No on Franco
No on Ripken.
All others correct. 8 so far.
Someone form Oakland HS from Napa HS a well known announcer, and a son of a famous player. There's hints for 4 more.
Most teams would be a more recent player, pitched this year.

Joe Morgan. Griffey Jr. McCarver.
Can’t be Morgan. Debut in ‘62. Saw him hit vs Marichal at CPark. So Ricky H? Bill Buckner?

One of my sports heroes - my favorite type of athlete. Quiet leadership. Did his job, didn't show off, it was never about him, just the team and the game. Maybe my favorite baseball player ever.
RIP indeed.

I remember that game! The radio was on where I was, never will forget Lon Simmons' call of that grand slam.
