A miss without a swing - Phogge - 11-04-2018

Shaw and Burr Kirvan. Closest thing to Skov. Plus he could have taught his teammates to tackle. Just an unbelievable whiff.

Was thinking the same thing during the game, especially after the announcers commented pretty much the same. Had a brother at Stanford, too? Anybody know what happened, and why?

Burr-Kirven was 6'0", 200 coming out of high school.  Didn't look fast enough to play safety (he isn't) or project big enough to play ILB.  Washington masks their ILBs with a two nose tackle front (Qualis, Vea and Gaines over this stretch) which require double teams and allow them to play much smaller and more mobile ILBs like Bierria and Burr-Kirven.

Stanford plays a standard three man, one NT front which depends on bigger ILBs to take on block.

We worry about Okereke, Perez, and Branch being too small to fit ideally in our scheme as ILBs.  That fear was far greater with Kirven, who was smaller than a couple of our safeties.

You can’t teach heart and he has it in bushels. Especially when you don’t give out all your scholarships.

I'm friends with his brother (from Stanford).

Stanford was looking for 2 ILBs in 2015 (the pipeline seemed strong at the time), and Barton was coming back from a mission so there was only 1 spot. Ben was hurt during multiple opportunities to camp his junior year and following summer. He could've shown up in a cast and talked shop, but he didn't.

Should Shaw have given him an offer regardless? In hindsight, and knowing how our ILB situation looks, of course. But at the time I don't think it was as boneheaded a decision as people make it out to be.
