WBB: Stanford 71 Davis 43 - 81alum - 11-04-2018

Preview:

Davis, unlike Vanguard, will provide a serious challenge.  Anchored by 6'4" redshirt senior Morgan Bertsch, Davis has been picked to win the Big West this year after dominating the conference the last two years.  Coach Jennifer Gross has implemented a mature Princeton offense with all the bells and whistles, and used it to assemble a 28-7 record a year ago.  Along the way they knocked off Washington State and Kansas State, and used a tenacious defense to hold Oregon State to 61 points in a respectable 61-47 loss.  Davis graduated both of its 40%+ 3 point sharpshooters and its top rebounder, but has plenty of young talent to go with Bertsch.  It will be fascinating to see an intricate Princeton system in operation.  Our offense incorporates a few Princeton pieces, but the UC Davis system is full-on, apparently, unless they change it up for us.  Will be an interesting contrast.

At the Chalk Talk Lindy answered questions about our players and the upcoming game.  Interestingly, the UC Davis coaches helped our coaches learn how to coach the Princeton--there is apparently some good will between the programs.  Lindy mentioned the improvement of Maya Dodson and also noted how impressed the coaches are with how much our freshmen have learned in just 40 days since practices started.

Overview:

Tara won't like our 21 turnovers, but our defense suffocated the Aggies--holding them to 23% shooting, and our offense seemed to work reasonably well except for poor shooting in the first quarter.  Kianna left the game and the bench after taking a spill in the first half.

Flow of the Game:

We got a chance to see why Morgan Bertsch is considered elite--we somewhat controlled her by fronting her and bringing help, but she still got 16 points.   The first quarter was a bit of a struggle, ending with a 17 14 Stanford lead.  From that point on our performance improved, with Stanford roughly doubling the points scored by Davis each quarter.  Kianna took a spill in the second quarter.  I saw her slap the floor but otherwise I did not see her express visible signs of pain--she got back up and (I think?) she continued to play for a short while.  The first half ended with a 36-24 lead.

We were all concerned, however, when Kianna did not come out for the 3rd, and she was not even to be seen on the bench.   The game really broke open with a 21-10 3rd quarter, on the strength of Smith's layups and treys, a trey by Lexie, and Jenna Brown's very first college points--a short teardrop in the paint.

Tara was substituting prolifically--all 14 players got in the game and ten (10!) got double digit minutes.  This made it hard to really judge the chemistry of the team or the flow of the offense.  But the fact that we ran out to a 30 point lead against a good team with an elite forward, and then held serve without our starters, felt like a good sign.

Performances:

We saw Jenna Brown for about half the game--and she got her first college points.   Lindy said that Jenna would primarily be used as a point guard, although there would be times when there were the equivalent of two point guards on the floor.  Jenna brought the ball up competently and obviously was not looking to do a lot of offense on her own.  She took only two shots--making them both--but missed both her free throws the first time she went to the line.  She played 18 minutes, had 2 assists and 3 turnovers.  My impression was that this was a solid performance for a very first college game--but playing point is no doubt the hardest position to adjust to at the college level, and she will need a lot of practice and experience during this preseason.

Alanna had only 16 minutes and was clearly very comfortable being our scoring machine.  She was 4/7 including 1/3 from three point range, and very impressively 7/7 from the free throw line.  After last year, that last stat is especially welcome.  Unfortunately there were a couple of ominous signs.  She accumulated 4 fouls and 4 turnovers in that 16 minutes.   Her career-long tendency to foul a lot raised its ugly head last night.

Kianna Williams was absolutely wonderful for the time we saw her, scoring 14 points on 5/8 shooting and dishing 3 assists to 2 turnovers.  Most important in my mind was her 3/5 three point shooting--it came when Davis was beginning to pack it in around our forwards and helped immensely in the closer first half.  I'm deeply concerned about her absence in the second half.

Maya Dodson looks so much more comfortable this year.  I thought she played better than in the exhibition game, and finished more moves around the basket that she was often clanking a year ago.  Tara gave her a long look--she had 26 minutes--no doubt partly due to Alanna's foul trouble.  She went 5/8 but unfortunately missed both of her free throws.  She grabbed 6 rebounds, had 3 spectacular blocks, but also accumulated 3 fouls.   I think it is becoming clear that after Alanna, Maya is our best offensive option inside.

Nadia Fingall had a quiet stat line in her 16 minutes.  She only took 1 shot and missed it, but sank two free throws and grabbed 4 rebounds--but also picked up 3 fouls and 3 turnovers.

Lexie Hull might have been the best player on the court, in her first official college game.  I'm not exaggerating.  Tara gave her the most minutes on the night at 27 and she used those minutes well.  She scored 11 on 5/10 shooting, but led the team with 11 rebounds and thus achieved a double double in her first game.  Her rebounding was really quite impressive--she boxed out very well and had a nose for the ball.   She also had 4 steals and a block and played impressive defense.  She is certainly going to be a starter her whole career.

With 14 players playing I won't comment on each and every one.  Carrington seemed off somehow (0/6), Anna Wilson was 0/4 but accumulated 5 rebounds, Lacie was 1/5, Jerome had 6 points and 8 rebounds in 17 minutes, and I thought Alexa Romana made the most of her 9 minutes with 6 points.

As a team, we had 38 points in the paint to their 12--not bad considering their elite forward.  We also managed 11 fast break points.  Holding Davis to 18% shooting in the second half was a really good accomplishment.

Mediocre three point shooting (25%), a tendency of our bigs to foul too much, and the unsettling fall and disappearance of Kianna are the three greatest concerns emerging from our first game of the season.

Conclusion:

I am very pleased with the beginning of our season.  This is chiefly due to the surprising readiness of Lexie Hull and the improved play of Maya Dodson.  There is still a lot to work on but we seem far and away ahead of where we were a year ago and we seem to have a much higher ceiling than last year.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Davis Wednesday 7pm - Jskass - 11-05-2018

Saw Morgan play this summer also in SF. Athletic with good moves and got stronger as game progressed.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Davis Wednesday 7pm - 2006alum - 11-05-2018

Sounds like it'll be an especially good game to see how Fingall and Dodson have progressed inside. Won't be able to catch it live on the stream, and I assume there won't be a replay available, so as always, looking forward to your report, 81!

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Davis Wednesday 7pm - 81alum - 11-07-2018

An interesting Tom Fitzgerald story with some insightful Tara quotes:

https://www.sfchronicle.com/collegesports/article/Stanford-women-hope-Alanna-Kiana-Show-propels-13362330.php

Alana and Kiana carrying the offensive load, improved defense and rebounding, and over and over I hear players and coaches talking about "playing with pace" which I take means running the Princeton faster than opponents can think to defend it.  I was very encouraged that Tara said that "all three freshmen defend well" with is always a Taraism for saying they will all see meaningful minutes.

Tara's quote doesn't go into detail about what she meant. My impression is that generally "pace" today means trying to push the ball up the floor quickly and attack early in the shot clock before the defense is set. That includes conventional fast breaks, quick passes to a player who has leaked out early or outrun her defender, and plays or actions designed to find the open player when any defender is late getting back or the defense is slow to get organized.

When the defense gets back and set in time, I don't know if Stanford will try to run their half court offense extra fast. They may, or they could go with more patience when that happens.

Or it could be both.  Clearly in the exhibition we tried to push it whenever we could.  But the purpose of the Princeton is to avoid that stagnation in the half court that we have seen too often--always providing a choreographed series of cuts and passes.  The faster and more efficiently we can progress through those reads the harder it is for the defense to keep up.  That is one of the fun things we might see tonight as Davis is more experienced in running the Princeton than we are and possibly more conventional about how they run it--it will make for an interesting comparison.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Davis Wednesday 7pm - 81alum - 11-07-2018

I am so eager for tonight.  Looking forward to an interesting Chalk Talk before the game--the first of the season is always the most informative. Hoping we get a chance to see Jenna Brown play extended minutes.  And hopeful that I can remember that 12 is Lexie and 24 is Lacie :)

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Davis Tonight! 7pm - Lorcan - 11-07-2018

Williams, Lexie, Nadia, Alanna, and Carrington to start! Let’s get this show on the road.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Davis Tonight! 7pm - TheFarm07 - 11-07-2018

We lead 17-14 after one quarter.

I like our offensive rebounding and defense, especially forcing 7 turnovers from the Aggies. We are pursuing the ball and relentless after any opportunities Davis gives us to get the ball.

I do not like our horrendous shooting percentage (overall: 35.3%, 3-pt: 00.0% (0/6) or from the FT line 5/10)

That's why we are only up by 3 after the first ten

We are up 36-24 at halftime.

Our defense held the Aggies largely scoreless for a long stretch of the 2nd quarter, however we couldn't seize the chance to extend the lead as we gave up at least 4 points on easy missed layups.

We are still shooting under 40% from the field, 3/12 from 3-pt range and 64% for free throws

Kiana took a scary tumble late in the quarter and stayed down for a few seconds clutching her face, but she got up again and hit 2 much needed 3-pointers to end the half. Hopefully she will be okay.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Davis Tonight! 7pm - Lorcan - 11-07-2018

Some timely Kiana Williams 3's and a fantastic Anna Wilson steal let us go up 36-24 at the half. Fingall, Smith, and Dodson all sat with 2 fouls. Hopefully, we'll see more in the second half with them getting involved. Dodson has played well so far with 6 points and 5 rebounds.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Davis Tonight! 7pm - CompSci87 - 11-07-2018

Jenna Brown started the 2nd half in place of Kiana. I don't see Kiana on the bench.

Neither do I. I'm hoping she'll come back soon. Nice to see Alanna step up here though.

agree on dodson. she was quite good tonite - scoring, rebounding, blocking shots.

jenna brown played a lot. didn't shoot much and missed most of what she shot (airballed her first free throw). so not a scoring presence tonight. hopefully, she will find her touch as the year goes on.

lexie hustled so much she got an unnecessary roughness call (at least that's what i heard the announcer say. sounds like football, right?). effectively a flagrant one.

Wasn't able to watch it, but according to the box score, Brown was 2/2 from the field. But yes, 0/2 from the line.

From the Stat sheet, I'd take Dodson or Fingal for our starting lineup. Really solid Stat line from Dodson. And Jerome with 8 rebounds - taking Tara's MO for the team this year to heart.

And 3 pt shooting was bad... 6/24. That needs to improve rapidly before we face stiffer competition...

RE: WBB: Stanford 71 Davis 43 - M T - 11-08-2018

I had to travel but got to catch the game online from the middle of the second quarter.
Wow... Now I see what everyone has been talking about.

Yeah, rough edges, but I like most of what I saw.   So much new talent!
No one yet mentioned that Lexie got a double-double!

On the live video feed, two men were announcing.  They added Kaylee in the second half, which added an inside perspective, which was good.

I suspect the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty to have been called by Missy, but it seemed to be off camera so I may be wrong.
(Boo Hiss!  The  GoStanford.com box score does not indicate the officials.  Somehow I suspect that was not an oversight.
Nor does the box score nor play-by-play report the unsportsmanlike conduct foul. (It does say "Technical fouls: none")  )
The online announcers didn't notice anything that they reported as to the cause.  They initially thought the stoppage was for a clock  issue.

Quote:Section 13. Unsportsmanlike Foul

Art. 1. An unsportsmanlike foul is a player-contact foul which, in the judgment
of the official, is:
a. Not a legitimate attempt to make a direct play on the ball;
b. Contact designed to negate an opponent's obvious advantageous position;
c. Contact away from the ball against an opponent who is clearly not
involved in the play, designed to stop the game clock or prevent it from
starting;
d. Contacting an opponent making a throw-in. This act shall also serve as a
team warning for reaching through the boundary. (See Rule 4-9.1.g.);
e. Excessive, hard and/or unnecessary contact against an opponent; and
f. Illegal contact caused by the swinging of an elbow that is deemed
excessive or unnecessary.

Hmmm...  Note that 13.1.a would penalize fouls on many basketball plays that we normally see (blocking out, screens, ...)  That is very poorly worded so as to be capable of being abused by Missy. (Note that the action must first be a contact foul. This section then indicates under what conditions the foul is  considered unsportsmanlike.)

RE: WBB: Stanford 71 Davis 43 - 81alum - 11-08-2018

My write-up is finished at the top.  I was too tired last night to do the game justice after the game--I had been up all previous night analyzing returns.

Yes, it was Missy Barlow refereeing the game.  I saw Tara having a couple of conversations with her over the course of the game.

Interesting that Kaylee was commenting.  She was sitting at the sideline press table just a few feet away from me and I did not notice her speaking.  Was nice to see her back in Maples.

I did not understand, and it was not really explained at the game, what the technical foul was about.  It seems it was incorrectly called on Coffee at first and then got changed--to Lexie?  I did not see the foul and so have no opinion, so could someone watching the video feed and hearing the commentary enlighten me?

RE: WBB: Stanford 71 Davis 43 - 2006alum - 11-08-2018

Thanks 81! Your game recaps and analysis are always hugely appreciated, all the more so when the games aren't on PAC-12 Network and thus I can't DVR them. Lexie sounds like a revelation for us.

Re: Williams, it sounds like she didn't come off the court immediately, and instead was examined at the half and didn't return? If she was swishing treys after the injury that suggests it wasn't initially perceived to be serious. Someone said she was "clutching her face." I guess that could either mean concussion protocol or maybe something with eyes or nose? I guess we'll just have to wait, but definitely not how we wanted to start the season.

the play was at the baseline to the right of the basket just outside the key. shannon was primary defender, between the ball-handler and the basket; lexie came over to double. together they knocked/threw the player hard to the ground. yes, it appeared that the foul would be called on shannon, who seemed to give the main shove. the refs reviewed the video for several minutes. my take was that shannon was already executing a successful takedown when lexie came in. therefore lexie's help was unnecessary. or perhaps shannon simply blocked the path and lexie executed the actual takedown. there was no video replay.
i immediately said, "flagrant one." i do believe that missy initiated the video replay, but i don't think the call was unfair. these days, even in football, throwing a player to the ground gets you a penalty.
uc davis got to shoot free throws and keep the ball. if i understand correctly, that makes it some variant of a flagrant rather than a technical.

and yes, thanks, unsportsmanlike conduct rather than unnecessary roughness. that sounds right - although still sounds like football.

RE: WBB: Stanford 71 Davis 43 - mbdude - 11-08-2018

Williams was sitting on bench during 4th quarter - appeared to have mask on face.

Was very impressed with Lexie. As 81 mentioned should be  a starter - but when Marta comes back, Kiana goes to 2, Dijonai sits? (she did look off last night)

Kaylee came on the broadcast in 2nd half - sounded very at home.

RE: WBB: Stanford 71 Davis 43 - BobK - 11-08-2018

Wiiliams came out of the lockeroom maybe 8 -10 minutes after the other players and sat on the bench. Players on both sides smiling at her. No mask.
No mention of her at the press conference being hurt.

Lexie was awesome. All over the court diving and rebounding. 4 steals in addition to her double double

Dodson very impressive

We shot about 54% from two. That’s very good

We do t just bring the ball up the court we run. Every time

Yes that was a flagrant foul although I do thought on Coffee. Still it’s a rule it’s a good one thus good call
