Stanford plays ucla this Saturday. They just cleaned $c's clock last week with a transfer running
back from UCDavis gaining over 200 yards. Some commentators feel this is the start of something
really big in the Southland under Chip Kelley. How do we match up" I had this as a clear win a few
weeks ago but now I am starting to get nervous.

And how did UCLA beat Cal this year 37 - 7?

I'm not sure how accurate this characterization is. UCLA won by 7, and was trailing 27-21 heading into the fourth quarter. UCLA outgained USC 479 to 449, but that is hardly cleaning their clock.
That being said, I worry about our run defense. UCLA ran the ball 52 times and gained 313 yards!

Let's not overreact here. USC stinks. Want proof:
USC conference rankings:
Daniels' PER: 11th (only UCLA's Frosh QB is worse, which is why Speight is playing now that he's healthy)
Total Offense: 11th
Rushing D: 10th (allowed and YPC both)
Penalties: T-11th
Turnovers: 12th
Even with USC being so bad, UCLA barely beat them. Cal and its conference worse offense managed to beat them also. USC is at best the 9th best team in the Pac-12 right now, and more likely only better than OSU and Colorado.

I am nervous for each and every game.
Some rough thoughts.
Favoring UCLA:
- Offense is coming along, if not exactly consistent. They passed but couldn't run much vs ASU (335 passing, 104 running) - ran but didn't pass much vs $C (166 passing, 313 running).
- They probably now have a better QB now in Speight, though that isn't exactly clear. Speight and Thompson-Robinson have about the same completion %, yds/att, and PER.
- As far as I understand they
are reasonably healthy. have relatively few new injuries. [EDIT: as noted by Outsider, overall UCLA has tons of injuries - but my impression is that hasn't gotten worse the last few games - not sure of details.]
- Their secondary is reasonably sized to match up with our tall receivers: CBs at 5'11'' and 5'10'', safeties at 6'0'' and 6'1'', and nickel at 6'0''. [At least no 5'9'' starters.]
- Their pass defense is better than their run defense, and Stanford is now pretty much an all-pass team.
- Game is in LA.
- Presumably they are in a relatively good mood right now.
Favoring Stanford:
- UCLA's defense is not good. Second worst in conference to OSU.
- Their defense doesn't seem to be coming around - they just gave up their season worst yds/play vs $C.
- Stanford's offense has been moving the ball regularly since the Utah game - even though not always holding onto the ball and finishing drives.
- Stanford's run defense is trending better with reputable performances post-Utah.
- Stanford is coming off a bye week and should be healthier than otherwise.
- Sagarin predictor has Stanford by 10 (12.3 neutral field); ESPN Stanford by 12.3 on neutral field (don't know their projected home field differential).
- UCLA spends week celebrating win over rival rather than prepping.

I don't know exactly who is able to play and who isn't - and how important they are - but UCLA has the longest injury list of any team in the Pac-12. They have 17 players, 5 more than the next most, which is USC at 12. Stanford is next at #11, tied with Cal.

I don't recall a Stanford--UCLA game that has generated less interest than this one.
Even during the Buddy/Walt years UCLA fans showed pretty well.
For Saturday's game StubHub has end zone tickets for less than $9 and tickets between the 40s for less than $20.
The free Stanford tailgate has 16 people signed up so far!

The USC v UCLA game had 57,116 for paid attendance. USC had a large percentage of those that actually were in the stands.
So UCLA's base is likely 35,000. Add in Thanksgiving weekend, no chance at a bowl game, a satisfying win over USC to reclaim that bell, and a middle of the Pac-12 Stanford team as an opponent implies that 45,000 in the stands might be a big accomplishment.

I will be one of them. Any other Cardboarders?

Any risk of us not being prepared due to smoke related practice restrictions?

I'll be there too with my 14-year-old in tow.
This is our third road-trip this year (Notre Dame, Seattle, & L.A), part of our plan to visit every Pac-12 stadium before he graduates high school though technically we've already been to the Rose Bowl.
(I'm not independently wealthy, by the way...the cost has been pretty reasonable, and for that I want to give a shoutout to Southwest Airlines. You can apply for two credit cards, and if you time it properly it's possible to get a companion pass that allows you 2-for-1 travel for nearly two years. They don't charge change fees, and with the wildfires right now they're even allowing people to change their flights within reason without paying any fare differences. All in all the best airline IMHO.)

Of course, there's a bit of a downside as well.

True that. I'll amend my statement to say it's the best
value of the airlines.
I find Virgin/Alaska nicer in coach, and business class anywhere is great on the company's dime. But when spending my own $$$ for short-haul trips like our Pac-12 stadium quest, Southwest is tops.

I think UCLA will be hyped for this game. They have momentum after beating their crosstown rival, their run game seems to be clicking, they are at home, and they don't want our streak extended to 11 straight.
We could possibly be a bit stale after our "bye". Don't know how the smoke has affected practice this week, or if there's been an emotional letdown from the Big Game being postponed. May be the danger of being overconfident playing a 3-8 team that we've beaten 10 times in a row.
Nevertheless, I believe Stanford prevails, 35-27.

Usually when we play UCLA at least one of the teams is in the running for the CC game. This year neither is, and that may have something to do with the lack of interest in the game.
Prediction? We win a fairly close, fairly high scoring game. Stanford 34 Bruins 27.

Didn't realize there was a formal definition, but FWIW here is mine.
Low scoring. Teams score less than 20.
Fairly high scoring. Teams score 20-35.
High scoring. Teams score over 35.
