Other NCAA games this weekend - Austroturf - 11-23-2018

Oregon is hammering the Beavs 21-3 at the half.  OSU was about to score and had 2nd and goal at the three, but Oregon intercepted in the end-zone.  I am assuming Oregon State's starting QB (Luton) has either been benched or suffered an injury, as it was Jack Colletto who threw the interception.  Ducks driving early in the 3rd quarter.

Luton appears to be back under center for OSU, so apparently no injury.

The VT/UVA game was nutty, tons of crazy plays including two one-handed TD grabs, 75-yard TD, punt block for a TD, offensive fumble recovered for a TD. VT won when UVA's QB fumbled a zone read handoff in OT.

RE: Other NCAA games this weekend - d4cohn - 11-23-2018

A snowstorm in Pullman has complicated Wazzu's seemingly open path to Pac-12 North Title. UW stunning the Cougars on the Palouse, with a 13 point lead, the ball, and less than 9 minutes to go in the game.

Down to 5 minutes.

This one is just about cooked for UW. Unbelievable that Washington State coug'd this opportunity tonight, but the Pac-12 championship drought will continue for Wazzu.

RE: Other NCAA games this weekend - BostonCard - 11-23-2018

In the end, WSU’s lack of a running game cooked them.  You just can’t play in that weather without a decent running game.

apparently Justin Herbert was injured in the game.  I wonder if he sits out Oregon’s bowl game.

As it turns out, going 1-1 against Wazzu and UW would not have kept us in the running for the North, regardless of the outcome of our two remaining games. We would have been tied at 2 losses with whichever team we didn't beat, and we would have lost the head-to-head tie-breaker against them.  (This of course assumes that the rest of the games would have played out as they have, regardless of the standings, which is impossible to know.)

The team that went 2-0 against the other two won the Division, and deservedly so.

Ironically, the Cougs probably would have done better in Seattle, where it is in the 40's with no precipitation.

RE: Other NCAA games this weekend - Austroturf - 11-24-2018

Over at CougCenter, there is a big debate about whether the snowy conditions hurt Wazzu's chances in the Apple Cup.  I am surprised there is a debate.  Slippery conditions and bad visibility are poison for a quick-striking air-raid system.  The outcome of the game may not have been different under dry conditions, but the Cougs definitely had a handicap in the game.  Minshew had difficulties grasping the ball, his field of vision was cluttered by driving snow, and his receivers had a more difficult time hauling in the passes.  Though Browning passed better than Minshew in the same conditions, he always had Myles Gaskin to fall back on.  And running the ball in such conditions is far easier.  It's easier to pass when you have other options.

I have to say Coug fans are taking the loss rather well and not looking for a scapegoat to lynch.  But the frustration is palpable after so many losses to their cross-state rival.  Most are hoping for a Fiesta Bowl bid, which would be good for the Pac-12 overall and open up more slots in the other bowl tie-ins.  Utah and Washington will fill the Rose and Alamo slots (in some order).  The remaining bowl games would be the Holiday, Redbox, Sun, Vegas and Cactus.  So far, 7 Pac-12 teams are bowl eligible.  Technically, it could be as many as ten if Colorado upsets Cal, USC miraculously beats Notre Dame and Arizona gets by ASU.  Assuming one more team becomes bowl eligible, then there would be just enough teams to fill-up the tie-in bowls.  Where we end up obviously depends on how we finish the season. Holiday Bowl would be nice for a change.  Maybe we get a rematch with Michigan State or Iowa.

The Washington DC fired a shot or two across the Pirate's bow when he said he hopes Leach sticks around for a long time because he is so easy to prepare for. "They have done the same thing year in and year out for five years now".
I wish Lance Anderson were able to say that.

Yes, I saw that statement by Jimmy Lake and was surprised at how in-your-face it was.  One Husky fan opined on a Stanford football blog that the best way to neuter Leach's air-raid is to rush three and drop eight, which is what the Dawgs have been doing successfully since Petersen arrived.  But the defensive scheme is just a bunch of Xs and Os.  You need the athletes to execute.  We could do the same thing if we had three pass-rushers that could consistently pressure the QB and eight LBs/DBs that could blanket the receivers and allow minimal YAC.

A further secret of the Husky success vs. the Cougars is a strong O-line and an effective run-game.  Hmm, that sounds familiar.  Year-after-year, the Husky O-line has had their way with the fast, but undersized Cougar front seven.  Is it scheme or just better athletes, because we have failed to establish an effective run-game against the Cougs for three years in a row?  By comparison, here are the rushing stats for Stanford and UW vs. Wazzu for 2016-2018:

                Stanford          UW
2016:            26              168
2017:            93              328
2018:           120             258

Stanford had McCaffrey (2016) and Love (2017-18) in the backfield; UW had Coleman (2016) and Gaskin (2016-18) in the backfield.  We managed 239 yards in three years; UW rushed for more than that yesterday.  And nobody can tell me Coleman and Gaskin are superior to McCaffrey and Love.

Guess we're back to deterioration in the O-line's performance.  A recurring theme in recent years.

RE: Other NCAA games this weekend - Austroturf - 11-24-2018

Shaky opening for Harbaugh's Wolverines.  First series 3-and-out, then OSU TD in quick order, then 3rd and long and forced to call a time-out on the next series.  Not an auspicious start.

RE: Other NCAA games this weekend - BostonCard - 11-24-2018

Nobody talking about the Harbaugh/Meyer match? tOSU jus went up 14-6 on Michigan about midway into the second quarter.

I thought he had a worthwhile beef, but, man, I love seeing Urban Meyer get flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct.

RE: Other NCAA games this weekend - CornFed - 11-24-2018

That PI on OSU was not catchable.  Does that not matter anymore?

RE: Other NCAA games this weekend - Austroturf - 11-24-2018

Michigan gets a big break at the end of the second quarter and only trails 24-19 at the half.  Two TDs in ten seconds thanks to an OSU fumble on the kick-off deep in Buckeye territory.  The Wolverines also managed to hold the OSU to a field goal down on their own 1 yard-line, so it's still anybody's game.  OSU could be leading this thing 28-13.

RE: Other NCAA games this weekend - BostonCard - 11-24-2018

Will Harbaugh ask Urban meyer, “What’s your deal?”

RE: Other NCAA games this weekend - BostonCard - 11-24-2018

62-39 the final.  I’m shocked to be honest.  I could see Ohio state winning a close, low or moderate scoring game.  I’m shocked that that offense was able to put up 62 points on that defense.  That leaves Harbaugh oh-for-Ohio State, and leaves the wolverines out of the playoff.

Doesn't look like he will have the opportunity.
I'm starting to think there are two immutable laws to college football.
1) The Pirate can't beat Chris Petersen
2) Jimmy H can't beat Urban.

RE: Other NCAA games this weekend - BostonCard - 11-24-2018

Cal is winning 14-0 despite not having taken an offensive series.  Two pick-sixes.  Going to be a long day for Montez.

And we are going to have to bring it next week.
