MBB vs. Portland State - SamuelMcF - 11-28-2018

Rematch of a game we shockingly lost last year.

Portland State up 14-10 with 10ish to go in 1H. KZ has 2 fouls already. We look SLOPPY. The press is killing us.

Need a post recruit BAD.
Isaac White is a liability on defense.

Ugh, the first half looks brutal, but we managed to put some separation between us and Portland State in the second half and we took a 10 point lead with about 6 min left.

KZ and DD both hit early foul trouble and played <20 minutes, so at least our rotation guys got more significant time. Good learning experience for them.

Positives:
- Bryce Wills has an incredibly high ceiling. He is freakishly athletic.
- Kodye Pugh and Marcus Sheffield both made a significant impact off the bench. Weird that Sheffield played the fewest minutes of the season despite there being more opportunity.
- Cormac Ryan isn't afraid to take his shots or take a charge. He's already D1 confident.
- Josh Sharma was able to stay on the court for extended spells and was our only sure bet to rebound the ball. Had a couple nice dunks (I think that's the only way he knows how to score), and was 3-4 on FTs too.
- Oscar Da Silva had 4 blocks, led the team in scoring, and looked the most comfortable out there IMO.

Negatives (some already stated in this thread):
- Ryan was afraid to MAKE his shots. It happens, so I'm not too concerned about this.
- Sharma is still sloppy with the ball, and will get eaten alive if double-teamed. He is also averaging a personal foul every 5 minutes. Wish we had landed Will Baker, although that was a long shot in the first place.
- Isaac White can't stop a driving guard or get around a screen to save his life. Defensive liability who has already been mostly over-recruited (and Tyrell Terry next year will be the nail in the coffin IMO - kid is a stud).
- Jaiden Delaire looks like he's playing scared. He's really talented but hasn't quite caught up to college speed yet. Struggled with a simple press. He'll get there, but like Daejon Davis last year it may take some time. Joining the team late has affected this for sure.
- We gave up 25 offensive rebounds to a middling Big Sky team. If this team plays a "small ball" lineup as it seems Haase desires, it will get absolutely roasted on the glass, and future opponents won't shoot as horribly as PSU did.
- 19 turnovers...which is better than last year's 28 against the same team. Davis cut his TOs from 11 down to 3, although he only played roughly half the minutes due to foul trouble. So the rest of the team had about the same number as last year (16 vs. 17). Don't like that at all.

Indeed.  And at least our losses this year in the pre-conference phase have been to very good teams (not EWU, Portland State and Long Beach State).  We get a chance to avenge each of these 2017 losses this year.
