still no offer - Phogge - 11-29-2018

For Butter's kid. They offered Hilinski so why not Butterfield? According to all the stories I hear from the Fertile Crescent (Antioch, Brentwood, Altamont) he wants to come. If McKee is scared off why would you want a QB who is afraid of competition?

RE: still no offer - OutsiderFan - 11-29-2018

Well, Washington and USC haven't offered him yet either according to 247.  Michigan, Tennessee, and Oregon have.

Hard to imagine he wouldn't be getting an offer in the next couple months, right?

That's really more a complaint than a question, is it not?

The actual why is because Hilinski is class of 2019 and Butterfield is class of 2020 - and we already have a 2020 QB in McKee.

It's pretty clear that our coach does not like having multiple QBs in a single class.
I am not sure how much of the fan base disagrees, though clearly many (most?) think we should have at least one each year.

I am pretty sure that the last class with more than one QB was 2010 (Harbs last class) with Brett Nottingham, Dallas Lloyd (though really class of 2012), and Darren Daniel.
For all of Harbs' reputation of liking to stockpile QBs, I think 2010 was the only year he ended up with more than one at Stanford - and that's a little iffy as Lloyd went on a mission and I suspect they were always thinking about Daniel as a WR.

Hogan and Crower were the same year, but I guess technically that was Shaw's first year (or half Shaw half Harbs).

Yeah - I forgot about Crower.
I think both committed while Harbaugh was still coach.

And one important difference is neither of them were super highly rated. Probably a much higher chance of one of them not panning out than with the 4/5 stars we've been getting lately.

RE: still no offer - BostonCard - 11-29-2018

You would think that with the depth issues we've had this year (including going into spring with only a healthy walk-on QB), that Shaw might want to re-evaluate his approach and perhaps offer more than one QB, depending on circumstances.  For example, he might want to offer a two QB's in the year after getting zero commits, so as to average one QB per year.

A scenario where between now and next year: Costello goes pro, Mills retires from football, McKee decides to go elsewhere after his mission, and we are left with Jack West and a former walk-on as our only QB depth.  If West is more Nunes/Nottingham/Burns/Chryst-like than he is Hogan/Costello-like, we will be completely screwed come 2020.  It's a numbers game, and right now 1 out of 3 QB's in our system has panned out.

I don't know the younger Butterfield from anyone else, but I really do believe we have to keep at least 4 QB's on the roster at all times.

Totally agree. Especially with the Costello scenario.

I'm pretty sure Hogan did not commit while Harbaugh was still coach because we sat with his mother at the Orange Bowl and she asked if we had concerns about Harbs leaving. Don't know for sure though. Been wrong before - it happens on rare occasions :P

He's got De La Salle this weekend. Would love to see him and Vaki take out those entitled Spartans.

in case you missed it

Michigan a ‘viable option’ for 2020 4-star QB Jay Butterfield, according to his head coach

The Brentwood, Calif. product wore Stanford jerseys growing up, but only when Harbaugh was there, according to his head coach.

RE: still no offer - Phogge - 12-04-2018

De La Salle is much better this year. Should be a titanic with Mater Dei.

Four picks for Butter. Hoping for a bounce back in the D1 game. I believe Stanford has offered Vaki who will be a safety in college. Anybody know a school that needs safeties?
