MBB: Stanford at Kansas, 2:30 PT - burger - 12-01-2018

Tired of watching runs up the middle on third and long?  Switch over to ESPN for Stanford at Kansas. (Um, MBB has struggled on offense, and Kansas has one of the top defenses, so you might see more scoring by Stanford in Big Game than this one).

17-17 with 7:23 to go in the first half.  Kind of an ugly game so far with a lot of missed shots, but we don't look bad overall and the defense has been solid.

Winning under 1 min 1st half

Just looking at posted play by play but a 3 by isaac white sounds great... especially when it extends the lead

Oh, 4 threes in the half. Even better!

I think one of the KU twitter feeds is calling him "Mini Haase"

Halftime and we have the lead!

35-29 good guys at the half.  This does not remotely resemble the team that we saw in the Bahamas.

RE: MBB: Stanford at Kansas, 2:30 PT - BostonCard - 12-01-2018

Staford starts the second half hot and we open a 10 point lead.

Switch in momentum? Jays hit a 3, a steal, and a shooting foul against us.

Maybe I should stop watching the game. Ever since I switched channels, Stanford lead shrunk from 43-31 to 43-40.

Went to OT and lost 88-82.

Hell of a game. Team should hold their heads extremely high after this one.

RE: MBB: Stanford at Kansas, 2:30 PT - shinsengumi - 12-01-2018

So close! Think the team could make a run in this Pac-12.

RE: MBB: Stanford at Kansas, 2:30 PT - PVTree - 12-01-2018

Gave that game away. Leading by 3, 13 seconds left, and we allow them to shoot a 3 to tie the game. We should have fouled and had them score 2 at most from the line. They had too much for us in OT. That Vick guy was unstoppable, making many 3s, from the second half forward.

So close.  Great effort by the team.  That last 3-pointer by Kansas tied it up and forced OT, and that went the way of the Jayhawks.

To go into Kansas against the #2 team in the country and play so well, with poise, and to sustain momentum shifts and runs by Kansas and the crowd going wild, especially down the stretch was impressive.

They might be capable of beating anyone. And they’re mostly freshmen/sophomores

Box score shows 84 percent from the charity stripe--way better than the 69 percent shot for the 2017-18 season and the 69 percent FT percentage so far this year.

I think this is a bit harsh. When I think of giving a game away, I think of missed FTs, sloppy turnovers, etc. We didn’t do any of that in the final minutes of regulation. They made a very difficult 3-pointer and sometimes you just have to tip your cap. I also am generally in favor of fouling when up by 3 points, but I think there was still too much time left for that approach in this case. With 9 seconds left (which is when KU attempted the game-tying shot), KU would’ve had time to set up their press after a made FT, force us to make 2 pressure packed FTs and then still have enough time for a decent look afterwards. If I have any gripe, it’s that Daejon didn’t make more use of the final 7 seconds and try to get to the rim a la Tyus Edney, but that’s being very nitpicky.

Agreed: I was thinking, should they foul? No, too much time left.

I think you should pretty much always foul up 3 with fewer than 10 seconds left. So I would agree it was an error. Obviously telescoping the game to a single play is a flawed way to analyze and judge a game, but it's still an unavoidable thing to focus on.

While it's nice to see the team is competing with strong opposition, it's also distressing that, two years and a bit into the Haase era, the team has no signature wins. At a certain point winning is the goal.

They could have fouled. They also defended poorly on the three. You can’t go under a screen when only a three hurts you. And whoever was guarding the screener had to hedge and double hard. Make him give it up.

I'm tired of moral victories for the basketball team. We had this game won if we foul in the last 8 seconds. At least, we would have increased our chances of winning. We need to start beating teams we are not supposed to beat to elevate the team.

I think our roster is too good to be .500. Today's game proved it. We need to raise expectations to win these games instead of being satisfied that we gave a ranked team a scare. I'm not happy that we gave away a signature road win that would carry a lot of weight come March. It may be the difference between Dancing or kNITting.

I didn't set my DVR, but watched a bit of the game.  When I was watching for about 5 minutes, three things stood out:

1. They led, lost the lead, and came back to take the lead.  Not a win, but that shows mental toughness they have lacked for years.
2. Okpala and Davis finally played up to their billing as they looked the part of guys who belonged playing at an elite level athletically
3. Sharma's defense at the rim

I saw the last shot of regulation and was like "oh please make this miss, the Pac-12 DESPERATELY needs this win!" I knew they are toast in OT, but the difference between how they played UNC and Kansas was like two different teams played. That's probably a good sign.

I'm excited by yesterday's level of play but I need to see it sustained over 3+ games before I'm going to believe that the program is really headed in a more positive direction. Dawkins' teams had their moments of brilliance but they could never do it with any consistency.
