MBB 78 Eastern Washington 62 - SamuelMcF - 12-15-2018

Avenged a terrible non-conference loss from last season.

The score isn’t nearly an indicator of how close this one was; we played very poorly for the first 30ish minutes before finally catching fire down the stretch.

RE: MBB 78 Eastern Washington 62 - JJJ - 12-15-2018

I DVR-ed it and haven't watched yet, but I saw the presser come up on facebook and watched for a bit and I thought we had lost!
Glad we won despite playing poorly. Lots of lessons to be learned from this one, apparently.

RE: MBB 78 Eastern Washington 62 - needle - 12-16-2018

It was a pretty depressing day overall for the Pac.

The best news (setting aside the Stanford victory) was that No. 20 ASU managed to win a squeaker on the road against a now  5-4 Georgia team.

UCLA and Arizona both lost at home to unranked teams.

Utah was blown out on the road at No. 19 Kentucky, and Washington lost by 12 to No. 13 Va. Tech in a game played in New Jersey.

Other losers on the day were USC to an Oklahoma team that's now 9-1 in a game played in Oklahoma (no shame there) and Oregon State to Texas A&M.

On the bright side (I guess), Kal won by one point playing at home against a now 3-6 Cal Poly team.

Like Stanford, Oregon took care of business at home. They won by 12 against a now 4-6 Boise State team.

Interesting stat. Stanford was 20 of 24 from inside the arc

Also 14-19 FT shooting (~74%) is solid, especially considering all but 1 of the misses were by freshmen Kisunas and Delaire (confidence will come with time).

RE: MBB 78 Eastern Washington 62 - winflop - 12-17-2018

My wife and I went - free tix for being football season ticket holders.

First half was some of the worst basketball I've seen in the Haase era - even last year with a 6/7-scholly active roster. It was Dawkins-esque in its ineptitude. First 10 of the second half was better but still not very good. The last 10 was more like what I would expect against a 1-7 (now 1-8) team.

Yes they were rusty having missed a week of practice due to team-wide illness and then finals. But my goodness that was putrid to watch.

I'm still waiting for this team to put together three quality games in a row - don't have to win all of them, just don't have to play like crap. Don't have last year's injury excuses. Haase needs to show convincingly that this is different from the inconsistency that plagued the Dawkins era.

Do we yet have a single quality game?  Maybe Kansas, until the very end, but then it's hard to call it a "complete" game.

RE: MBB 78 Eastern Washington 62 - BobK - 12-17-2018

Even with the OT loss I’d call the Kansas game a complete game. Certainly can’t ask for more against a top top team thru 4 quarters.

The eastern Washington first half was terrible basketball

RE: MBB 78 Eastern Washington 62 - Renaissance Man - 12-17-2018

The most encouraging takeaway from this game was Oscar DaSilva having a strong second half and finally getting his shot to go from outside the arc.  If DaSilva can play to his potential of being the team's best inside/outside threat, the entire team gets better.  Ryan will find more open threes, KZ and Davis will find more driving lanes and Sharma will find less congestion in the lane and benefit from dropoffs from drivers.  Defenders have been playing off of DaSilva and daring him to shoot, while making it impossible for him to drive.  I am optimistic about league play (if KZ can avoid unnecessary fouls).

Worse than Florida? A little hard to believe if it was.

Gotta do better with a three point lead and 13 seconds on the clock.  More broadly, letting your opponent go on a 16-3 run from 60-52 to 63-68 over the course of 4 minutes is also not an element of a "complete game".

RE: MBB 78 Eastern Washington 62 - Spiny_Norman - 12-17-2018

The announcers said that some players had gotten sick earlier in the week with an unidentified bug. That may have affected the quality of the play.

Taking the #1 team in the country to OT in their house is ABSOLUTELY a quality game

Doing what's expected of you - or better - is what I define as a quality game. For example:
- Close loss to a highly-ranked opponent, especially on the road (Kansas)
- Drilling a team you're supposed to drill (Seattle, UNCW which was pretty much over at halftime)

What's not quality:
- Getting blown out by anyone not in the Top 10 (Florida, Wisconsin)
- Not drilling a team you're supposed to drill (E Washington)

So three of each. That's mediocrity at its finest, and that's not good enough

Seattle win was a quality game - look at their record so far

Devil's advocate here; is winning by 16 not "drilling" Eastern Washington? If I hadn't watched the game, just from the final score I would've thought "Cool, we thumped them. Next."

They trailed by 5 at halftime, so even if hadn't watched it I would say no.

By contrast, UNCW was down 14 at the half and lost by 13.

Can't be considered a complete game when over a 4 minute span you give up an 8 point lead and are looking at a 5 point deficit.  Giving up a small run against a top team in the country is expected, but a 16-3 run is not part of a complete game.

I didn't say "complete" game I said "quality" game. There's a difference to me. Your definition of "complete" is not attainable on a consistent basis by any team. Teams get on runs all the time. It's how you respond afterwards that defines quality for me. Yes we gave up an 8-point lead but we also overcame that 5-point deficit and put the game into OT. That's quality in my book.
