Shaw's media comments re: Sun Bowl - SamuelMcF - 12-17-2018

Skeleton crew for the bowl game. Love, Little, Irwin, Smith, Herbig, Jackson, Murphy all out. Toohill, Branch, and Pryts probable. No mention of Ben Edwards and Curtis Robinson. Wilson starting in Irwin's place, so we still intend to redshirt Wedington.

Herbig won't play and it is not injury related. Shaw says "no comment" to every other question about Herbig. Maybe Herbig has decided on his own to sit out.

Shaw was asked about backup tackles if Hamilton or Hall gets injured or needs a break. His response - junior Henry Hattis and true frosh Grant Pease are next in line.

It’s amusing that inception of the playoff has so marginalized all other bowl games that the players have seen their uselessness even before fans tuned them out. Of course, players sitting out bowl games only makes them even less relevant and compelling for fans. Pretty close to NFL exhibition games, which are truly awful.

I wish the bowl industry a slow, painful death, to be replaced by an expanded playoff that kills off also dumb conference championship games.

I prefer the old bowl system and a mythical champion or even two champions. Big Ten (14) vs PCC (8 now 12) in the Rose Bowl always the biggest game. Could care less about a playoff system.

With Smith out, Pitt will pay a lot of attention to Parkinson. I only remember Harrington catching a couple of passes and don’t remember ever seeing Fisk out in a pattern. I wonder if we’ll see either of them running Smith’s routes.

If he isn't healthy enough to play, then I have no issue. Didn't see any reference to that in his statement though.

But if a player is healthy enough to play and doesn't, then I have a problem. Bowl games are part of the season.

the part below, emphasis added, about being completely healthy implies some level of injury, watching him play this season I don't think he has ever been close to 100% healthy this year

You can be healthy enough to play, but still at least somewhat injured, and in those cases, getting some additional rest can be beneficial for your recovery.

I'll bet some of the players Shaw is holding out of the bowl game are similarly injured as Love: they could go if needed, say if this were the conference championship or national playoff game, but for just a middling bowl game it's better to let them have more time to heal and give the younger players more reps.

Regardless, I surely don't "have a problem" with Love's decision.

I totally agree with his decision and I also believe that he hasn't been 100% healthy since taking a hit near the end of 2017.

Well, it seems like pretty close to half our starting offense is going to be out for the whole game in this one.
Hopefully the ones who do play will fare better than our defense did in the second half of last year's bowl game.
Unlike others, I don't consider this game totally "meaningless" because losing it will tie 2014 for Shaw's worst season since he has been head coach here. Not particularly anxious for that to happen.
