First Responder Bowl cancelled - chrisk - 12-26-2018

Less than 10 minutes into the first quarter, the game was stopped (lightning) and later officially cancelled.

Despite not having played on grass, the Boise State coach said before the game they would be ready for the conditions.
However, the lightning was too much to overcome.

Apparently the game isn't going to be rescheduled, which is weird, since it's a totally important game that matters a ton for each team and which must be played.

In all seriousness, though, I'm glad they cancelled it. Looks like the weather is pretty scary down in the Dallas area. The game counts as a "no contest" and none of the stats accrued at the point of cancellation will count.

I'm guessing the coaches are fine with this outcome, or at least, they will be once they've gotten over the initial disappointment of not getting to compete when you've prepared to compete and have the adrenaline high going. You got what you wanted out of bowl eligibility--extra bowl practices focused on developing your younger players. Now you don't risk injury, everyone stays safe, you've gotten some improvement, etc. It's a bummer not to compete when you're geeked up and ready to go, so there will be some disappointment, and it *really* stinks that you ended up messing up everyone's Christmas for the sake of a game that officially never was, but such is life. The kids get their bowl swag, you got your practices in, and you turn the page to next year.

Has a bowl game been cancelled before?  This may be a good trivia question later on.

Hawaii's bowl game against San Jose State in 1941 got canceled after Pearl Harbor.

The First Responder Bowl is the first bowl game to be canceled due to weather though.

not exactly a bowl game but the last College All-Star Football Classic game in July 1976 was ended due to an electrical storm in the 3rd quarter

That was less of a bowl game, though, and more of a 3-game exhibition between Willamette, SJSU, and Hawaii.

On a more serious note, the cancellation has Directors' Cup implications.

For teams finishing outside the Top 25 in the final USA Today poll, a bowl victory is worth 45 Cup points while a loss is worth 25.  Boise State is currently ranked 24th while Boston College is not ranked.  It will be interesting to see how the NACDA handles this in the final Fall standings.
