Strange quote for this type of announcement.  Is Stanford the new village?  Is he the child?  Weird

Not if you are Polynesian.

He's thanking his "supporters" -- family, friends, etc. -- for raising him to be what he has become.
Exactly. Totally normal for Hawai’i.

RE: Class of 2020 - JohnR34231 - 12-15-2019

According to 247 Sports E.J. Smith is scheduled to announce on Wednesday. They say his top three are Florida, Texas A&M, and Stanford.

RE: Class of 2020 - OutsiderFan - 12-15-2019

Mike Farrell believes EJ Smith will be picking aTm. His sister goes there and the Houston area is much closer to Dallas than the S.F. area. I honestly have no idea why anyone would go through the Stanford admissions gauntlet, be admitted, and choose another school, but that's just me.

I don't know if Farrell is looking at EJ Smith through the prism of a typical recruit, or through one that includes the characteristics that apply to Stanford recruits who are admitted.

I agree with you, but I thought the same thing about Dax Hollifield.

FWIW there is one pundit on 247Sports who picks Stanford, all the rest are undecided.

I believe Hollifield's girlfriend was going to VT, so kind of a mitigating circumstance. Hopefully they are still together.

Yeah, I guess having your girlfriend go to a school would be a stronger influence than having your sister go there. At least I hope it would.
Although my son had a steady GF in HS and I would have been pretty upset if his choice of college was based on where she was going.
I also wonder a bit if a commitment from Smith might make Casey Filkins decide that going to Kal wasn't such a bad idea after all. He said that an offer from Stanford was a "dream come true" so presumably he wouldn't.

RE: Class of 2020 - SamuelMcF - 12-15-2019

Smith's older sister plays soccer at aTm, and the family visited for the terrible gameday experience against the Domers.

RE: Class of 2020 - SamuelMcF - 12-16-2019

Wrong thread Langdude. :)

Btw looks like the class is mostly settled at this point. Signs pointing negative on Smith. Pending 1 - maybe 2 - more (likely in Feb) unless we're surprised.

Not like EJ Smith was going to put Stanford over the top. Clemson could have as many as eight 5-star recruits including 6 OL in its 2020 class. It has the potential to be the greatest signing class in history in terms of recruiting ranking star power.

Yeah, the pundits on 247Sports are starting to migrate toward Smith to Texas A&M. Usually not a good sign.
Shaw should call up Smith and ask him if he really wants to play for a coach that would leave his job and not even call his players together to tell them he was leaving and say goodbye.

Well at least one pundit who commands a big headline is predicting something different.
Smith prediction
[This is a pay article that I cannot read, but I can read the lead.]

And personally, I hope Shaw is recruiting Smith with a different pitch.

I'm reasonably sure he is. Negative recruiting is not supposed to be Shaw's thing.

Well, the Top APB is Chris Tyree, a Notre Dame commit. Hard to imagine 247 publishing this headline if not correct.

To be pedantic ...

- It doesn't say "The top APB", it says "Top APB". These sites use that phrasing all the time so that there can be lots of "Top XXX". Makes fans and recruits happy.
- If you go to the Smith recruit page, Wiltfong now predicts Stanford.
- Suddenly Stanford leads A&M on crystal ball predictions for Smith. (Though Stanford is tied with Undecided.)

RE: Class of 2020 - newguy - 12-17-2019

ok i don't want to get my hopes up, but if EJ Smith signed with us, that would really make my day.

I wonder if Smith has gone back and forth or sources of information have been right and wrong. It puzzles me how any of these recruiting experts can really know what decisions are when the recruits are making public declarations under the guise of it being a surprise.

I was going to make the same pedantic observation; glad someone beat me to it.

I am not exactly sure what the point is to make a crystal ball prediction of "undecided".
