RE: Class of 2020 - OutsiderFan - 03-04-2019

The mother of Tobin Phillips has posted on the Cal Rivals board and today said Stanford was his goal since grade school.  She also says he runs a 40 between a 4.9 and 5.0 at 6-4, 290 and will be timed electronically at some camp this weekend. Apparently he is working with a sprinting coach.

RE: Class of 2020 - newguy - 03-04-2019

3 more today beyond Metcalf (he's 6'2" and will be an interior OL, BC).

EJ Smith - 4* RB from TX, NFL legend Emmitt Smith's son. Let's get Barry Sanders and Barry J. on the phone!

Zach Frazier - 3* DT from WV with a 4.0 GPA. 3-peat state champion wrestler (hmmmm, where have we heard this one before?!). Yes please.
Here's a great feature on him which gives me even more Harrison Phillips vibes: https://www.timeswv.com/sports/the-incomparable-zach-frazier-in-the-words-of-those-closest/article_2e1f8af2-359c-11e9-a2ab-47b18482a5c4.html

Tuli Tuipulotu - 3* OLB/Edge Rusher/DE? (6'4" 250) from CA with a 3.7 GPA and in honors classes. Older brother plays DT for the condoms.

What a great article! Thanks for sharing. The guy sounds like Superman.

RE: Class of 2020 - Publius - 03-08-2019

Our yield on NFL progeny must be high.  I recall reading an article about how many sons of NFLers populate Stanford's roster and it mentioned that every one of their dad's played in the NFL with a Stanford graduate.  Can anybody recall if there was a Cardinal in the Cowboys locker room in that era?  Emmitt did play for Denny Green with the Cardinals at the end of his career.

RE: Class of 2020 - French Rage - 03-08-2019

Dumb question, but who was the previous state champion wrestler?

Harrison Phillips was a 2-time Nebraska state champion iirc

According to footballdb.com, Chad Hutchinson was QB (started 9 games) for the Cowboys during Emmitt Smith's final Dallas year in 2002.

Some more stuff about the four we offered yesterday from TOS (not paywalled)

Also some good stuff about our target numbers at a couple positions:
4 OL
2 RB

Yep, starting to look like the kid is going to have to win his H-mans at some other school.
You never know though, Shaw may have a last minute change of heart.
Just like he did with Josh Rosen.

RE: Class of 2020 - Phogge - 03-09-2019

LOL. BC always desponds. Interesting how so many around here and especially at the sixth grade site on TOS (me included) are so pessimistic re the future. Mills is a question mark. If Costello goes pro then you have one recruited healthy QB in all probably plus a highly rated 21 year old freshman back from a mission.

Enough. Baseball season is upon us.

I mean, I’m with you; given the number of scholarships that go unused every year, stockpiling an extra quality QB, as insurance strikes me as a  pretty obvious move, But at this point, its pretty clear that the younger Butterfield is not going to be recruited to play at stanford.  Ultimately, history will either bear Shaw out or show him to have wasted a major opportunity.  If Costello leaves after next year, Mills never gets healthy, West never really becomes a serviceable QB and McKee either doesn’t come back or never developed, and Butterfied thrives elsewhere, then it will be a pretty scathing indictment of Shaw.  On the other hand, if some combination of those things doesn’t happen and QB is fine then Shaw will be proven right.

Most likely it will be an ambiguous situation like with the Rosen situation, where we will have some struggle doing forward, but it won’t be completely clear that Shaw screwed up by not recruiting.

RE: Class of 2020 - Phogge - 03-09-2019

Ambiguity reigns BC. Best to sit back and watch. No more Butter boasting. Worrying too much already about a punchless Giants lineup.

I agree that it wouldn't be a bad idea to get another quality QB as an insurance policy.
Shaw obviously doesn't though, and after it has been suggested four or five times I think it's time to give it a rest.
